After just spending $565 on the Rokinon Cine t1.5, 35mm I can't for the life of me figure why it's a better deal than the Canon EF 50mm f 1.8 selling for $125.

Can someone explain this to me?

(Or for that matter the
Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Wide Angle Lens for Canon SLR Cameras selling for $449.)

1. 50mm is one of the easiest focal lengths when it comes to calculating/building the lens. The wider the lens, the more complicated to make it fast and sharp wide open.

2. the lens offers a longer focus throw than the 50mm canon II, which is nice for rack focus and precise focus pulling - canon's 50mm II just offers a small focus ring on the front, which is not very practical

3. the lens offers geared focus and iris rings

4. the lens is declicked, so you can expose in between 2 stops or change iris in a smooth transition while shooting

5. the build quality is much better than the canon's yoghurt pot

Stefan

The 50mm f/1.8 has the ugliest bokeh I've seen on a modern prime lens. That basically does it for me, but if it's not enough you can look at the focus ring and general build quality.
(not that it's a bad lens, just one that I would ditch as soon as I had the budget for something with a better bokeh)

Then again, those are different focal lengths; if you want to see how great the samyang 35mm is, compare it with the canon 35mm offering of a similar price:

I don't understand. You purchased a 35mm lens, and now you can't understand why it's better deal than a $125 50mm lens or a $449 28mm lens? Did you really need a 35mm lens, or would a 28mm or 50mm have been the better choice? Is it about the correct focal length lens needed, or the amount of money you just spent on this new 35mm lens?

Im going to go out on a limb and guess you did not take my advice about purchasing that little $30 smartphone app pCAM before you went and purchased a lens you are now second guessing.

Hey, great site Samuel! I have never seen that one before. A really neat quick comparison site! Totally emphasizes just how great that Samyang lens is.

Say, David, I'm looking for an anger management site.

When I find one would you like me to post the link for you?

Naw, I'm good on the anger management issues. But let me know if you need further help selecting lenses. I've been doing this nearly 40 years and own some 50 plus lenses.
