canon DSLR - formatting and filename issue

Hi all, I have 2 5d mkii's that up until recently were on very different file names if that makes sense. I.e camera a was up to about clip 3000 and camera b up to 7000.

I formatted cards from both cameras in the same camera before a wedding this week and found when I copied the footage across that they were both producing files of the same file name i.e camera A file 7224, camera b also had a file 7224 (which causes a real pain when sorting footage)

Could anyone advise of whether this is because I formatted all cards using the same camera as I'm sure I've done this before with no issue.

Also is there a way to manually dial in what number you want clips to start at before a shoot to avoid this happening?

Many thanks

My guess: when you put the card in the 3000-camera, it already had in it a picture taken with the 7000-camera. Each camera keeps its own counter, but if it finds higher-numbered files in the card, it goes on from there. I'd put the files on two different folders in the PC.

thanks guys, to be honest the method I was using was ideal for me until the numbers caught up with eachother. So is there no way to change the numbers on one card so there is a safe difference between the file names again?

edit - note to self. try things before asking the rest of the world! Found manual reset so Im now on 0001 on one and 8000 odd on the other. Hopefully they'll stay separated! thanks again

I was going to suggest that. In one of Hurlburts early videos he talks about setting the start number for the files so Cam A, B, C, etc... start with different numbers to distinguish them from each other.
