F3: Canon compact zooms + Zeiss CP2

I've shot with both.

The new Canon zooms have a warmness that's hard to describe. It's not like the entire image is tinted, it's more like the tiny one-pixel aberrations on say sharp edges are all magenta-warmish, rather than being magenta on one side and green on the other. It makes the entire image read warm in a way. I noticed it when shooting charts with a 30-105.

It's not really similar to anything you see with CP2s.

So if you have other choices, I could think of a better pairing. But really, in the end, I doubt anybody would really notice. Besides, a one-point nudge in post would probably take care of anything that jumps out.

Maybe. If you look closely, the white points on the actual white patches of the charts are identical.

I myself would leave this correction to post, because whether you notice it or not is going to dependent on what's in front of the lens.

good point.

have you used this lens combo in the field? I'm most curious about contrast on faces.

Any particular reason for looking at the Canon Zooms over the new Zeisses George? They're the same price far as I can tell.

To follow up on this thread topic, here is the project where I mixed the Canon 30-105 with CP2s (21/2.8, 35/2.1, 50/2.1, 85/2.1), and an Ultraprime 135:

No trailer avail yet, but the BTS shows some footage from the movie.
I definitely noticed a slight difference in warmth (red) and contrast, but nobody else really noticed, and it was all matched together in Resolve quite easily.

Looks really good.

And you've described the intercutability of pretty much all modern lenses. They're all getting very good and harder to tell the differences between.

Only when you find two manus or designs that are really on opposite needs of the spectrum would anybody notice. I myself think the Canons are more different than any other lenses out there and your folks still didn't notice!

And now that I've had time with both the CZs and the Canon 30-105....GREATLY prefer the Zeisses.

thanks nate!
I was nervous at first, but I've shot another project with the same lens set already, and it's been working out just fine.
