Canon candlelight tests: C70, R5, R5C

Out of curiosity, I recently ran a test to see if my cameras could shoot well in low light -- as seen in Wolf Hall (BBC TV series, well worth watching). The results seemed pretty cool to me, so I thought I'd share:

The test isn't terribly scientific, but it is what it is. The cameras are just what I had to hand -- the C70, R5, and R5C. All are using the same lens. Enjoy.

I would be interested to see how the R5 handles motion at high ISO. It is impressive how much noise reduction Canon managed to automate into the R5, but I am interested in seeing what happens with movement. Even at normal NR settings, I think the current crop of Canon cameras are fine up to 3200ISO unless you think you want to lifetthe shadows.

What kind of thing are you thinking of specifically? I'm vaguely toying with doing this test again, but better, so I'd be interested to know what I could include.

Based on your tests, it appears that the R5 has adaptive noise reduction built in that keeps the video image looking clean at high iso relative to the R5C and C70. I would guess that both of those other cameras could be made to look as clean with changes to their noise reduction settings. But I would be interested in seeing how the NR affects motion at high iso. For example, you could try your moving candle test at high iso.

It's not important though, as I think the current test has some interesting results since I haven't tested the high iso on these cameras myself.

On the R5 high ISO NR was low -- not off.

This started out really casual, just to see if my cameras could even do this. But next time, I want to pay more attention to NR settings, and see if there's a way to highlight the effects of NR -- like more realistic detail, moving candles, etc.

Damn, Ian. This is great. Subscribed and followed. Takes be back to the early days of the DSLR/cinema cam revolution. I'd be curious to see how the R6 factors in. I recall it being bandied about that the R6 was a stop better than the R5 due to the smaller megapixel count.

Thanks! Interesting about the R6 -- but I don't have one. I would like to compare to some Sonys... don't have one of those either, though.
