C80: Canon C80 Any Good?

I’ve been learning a lot about the Canon C80 and made a video showing what I’ve discovered so far…

CANON C80 Review | Unboxing, Overview, Setup, Settings, Footage, LOG, LUTS & RAW

I can see a hell of a lot of work here!

But. maybe a review could be more subjective .. even if you make this clear.

I am interested in this camera having a c200 and not wanting a C70 for various reasons.

I would wonder..

how do you hold it? can you see the monitor, are the shots stable after two minutes.

--

From the knowing the weakneses of the C200..

can we get audio over SDI
Are web/app interfaces functional or mess
Is the af sticky when the shot is low key/backlit

Thanks for the detailed review. The c80 definitely excels in terms of usability. The low light and AF look to be much better than the c70. I think it would have been cool if you could have backlit yourself in the AF test, as that's where the c70 struggles at times, as well as in low light. I actually prefer the images with the filter on, as I think it takes the digital edge off a bit. I do prefer the color and highlight rolloff of my c70 though, but the c80 is definitely no slouch...

Great ideas, guys. I guess because I am new to canon cinema cameras, I did not test all of the things that would have been good to know based on previous canon cameras. I’ll keep testing. Thank you for your kind words.

Excellent review, thanks! From my POV as a C70 owner, the C80 looks a bit more detailed than the C70, but not sure that makes it "better' in my opinion. I guess the natural detail is there if you need it.

Also, the triple base ISO is a cool party trick, but the speed booster on the C70 negates some of that benefit. For example, I've very rarely had to shoot at ISO 12,800 since every lens I own can go f/2.0 or lower with the speed booster. Still, I've owned every entry level Canon cinema camera, so I imagine I will cave and get a C80 eventually.

Nice review, in the now classic LWYD style!

Personally, autofocus performance is the single biggest reason to be interested in any of these cameras. This is one of the single hardest areas to evaluate without actually handling the camera in person, which should be the whole point of a youtube review - giving people solid evidence for buying/not buying.

After looking at countless tests, the AF tests are always like let's shoot the dog running around or girlfriend walking and running to the camera. Not that you want to take your channel in this direction and it'd go completely against your style, but having the best AF tests on youtube is still completely up for grabs. I'd be shooting fake narrative scenes, product shots with hands/bodies entering the frame, handheld with elements moving through the foreground. These somewhat exist but they hardly ever represent what it's like actually shooting for a director or client (partly because youtubers don't shoot for directors or clients). All this to say that I appreciate the review, your shots look nice, your voice is soothing, but the AF chapter doesn't tell us anything.

Yes - my experiecne is that the R5 is eating the AF on the C200 and this may make it a better camera.

XLR, ND, timecode, raw, Sdi good connectsion.. none of this will beat a sharp shot!

Sony might even be better than the R5.

If been planning a c500ii as my upgrade but I now think that the C80 or C400 will make the C500 worth skipping... due only to auto focus.
