Canon C500 Sale, New for $6999.99

With C500, Odyssey7Q+ & Odyssey RAW Bundle, for under $10K you get:

4K/UHD30p Apple ProRes (HQ/422/LT)
4K/UHD60p RAW
4K120p "half RAW"
2K/HD 12-bit/10-bit RGB 4:4:4 in Apple ProRes (4444XQ/4444) or uncompressed DPX

And gorgeous color that is very easy to grade. I don't know anyone who doesn't like the image out of the C500. It is lovely.

Don't dismiss the C500 just because it isn't the latest/greatest offering. It's an impressive shooting machine. I know employees of several major retailers who are scooping them up with the price drop for use on their own projects. That has to speak for something.

Mitch, I think you and Canon are the only ones in the world who know what "Half RAW" is. lol

My breakfast was half-raw too.

Anyway, at $6,000, it's kind of a toss-up between it and FS-7. C500 was once a $25,000 camera.

Perhaps you actually know what it is, but 'half' refers to resolution—which makes the term pretty straight forward and plain.

Some would say 'raw video' is a desirable feature, but this is not Canon's attempt to promote a weak feature as "…can't believe it's not raw!"

If you read the term and think of it as "not quite real raw", then it becomes kind of lame, but the is not what it is. It is real raw at half resolution (skipping every other vertical line) to get more fps.

The C300 II does Log 2 / Log 3. C500 only does C-log and is limited to about 12 stops. C300 II records 4K internally and XF AVC is an excellent compressed 10 bit codec. C300 II AF features are more advanced.

Is it worth $5000 more? Hard to say. A lot of DPs liked the C500 for a reason. They shot with it for the space station IMAX movies. BandPro shot a C500 piece, and a C300 II promo piece, and of the two, I kind of like the C500 one better - same team, same DP.
If you can wait a year or two, the C300 II will probably fall below 10K as they all do. If you need a great camera now, the C500 is a great deal.
The Odyssey 7Q and 7q+ yield excellent image quality from the Canon 4K RAW, but if you have to hang a battery off of it for power, it becomes unwieldly. For that reason, I prefer the C300 II but I own neither at the moment.

TY. Yea, I did my research when I first heard the term a few years back or whenever it was...and I've seen people explain it on here once or twice...here's a throwback I'm sure we all remember as well:

I remember seeing Man & Beast at the Canon presentation at NAB on a huge screen (IMAX theater maybe?) with perfect 4K projection. It. Was. Stunning.

I'd say the term should be "half baked" rather than half RAW. But that's just me... :)

Great camera. If it had DPAF, I would seriously consider buying it at this price along with an Odyssey 7Q+ but no DPAF is non-starter for my work.
