Canon c50 announcement Sept 9

I really like the look of this for a gimbal camera. Shame there's no built in ND but I can get around that with the ND RF to EF adaptor, all of my glass is EF mount. I was interested in the stills mode which would save me taking a still body with me but noticed it doesn't have a mechanical shutter so I don't think it will fire a flash. Need to do some digging.

Yep, I'm in the same boat pretty much.

Your point regarding the mechanical shutter is very valid for those of us who shoot both video and stills. My understanding is that since it lacks the mechanical shutter there's essentially no option to sync with flash.

So unlike the R5C, which has been a very capable hybrid camera for me and I have used for both stills jobs and video jobs, this may not be the answer I was looking for.

It's unfortunate. I need to decide now if this is workable as a very capable video body, but on the photo side a camera that is only good for jobs that don't require syncing with flash.

You could say that one of the positives, if that's the case, is the availability of people selling off their C70/C300 MKIII's to get the "latest and greatest" means you can pick up a used Canon with DGO for cheap nowadays.

A lot of good options nowadays, depending on what you want or need.
Yeah, definitely, Dustin... I'm really looking forward to the new Nikon ZR and the possibility of using it as a b-cam to my Komodo...

Frustrating. If it can't fire a flash then there seems little point in putting a still OS onto it - I wouldn't take it out on a job to shoot stills without that capability, I use flash all the time.
It's certainly very viable for me as a gimbal camera though.

Utterly stupefying to not include IBIS. They're pissing off the 99% of potential shooters to please the small minority who insist on fixed sensors. I get some people may occasionally need to mount it to a drone or car or something, but about a billion more people want to pick it up and run, like with a A7s3 or FX3.

Also, why can't we get a downscaled 3:2 image? Will the processor not handle it? I imagine it would be much easier to edit 4096×2731 and 2048×1365.

I do not think fully mirrorless still cameras have a limitation when it comes to flash. They can still fire a flash unit. The C50 being a cine camera might not, but true stills mirrorless can.

It's the lack of a mechanical shutter that causes the limitation with flash. You need the entire sensor to be fully exposed in sync with the strobe flash. Since the electronic shutter reads out line-by-line it won't sync up.

Theoretically if the C50 had a global electronic shutter then it could still sync with flash, but it does not.

No high base iso (like 12800) and lack of IBIS are big mistakes. IBIS is a hugely popular feature in the fx3 as is the 2nd base ISO. I doubt this will turn fx3 shooters to Canon...

IBIS is a hugely popular feature

I dont even know what IBIS is.. but my r6 magically does not need a rig or a shoulder mount up to 200mm. Now the C400 (posted a while ago) just seemed janky.

I guess this is ibis in action.

I get keeping it off the cameras that are going on an arri trinity or OCon 2575.. but the rest.. it would seem to be essential.

Everything about this camera says that the R1/R3/R6iii are better tools outside a feature film set.

Ok Ive watched this vid below.

This seems like a replacement for me C200, for the gimbal or huge shoulder rig.

Lose..
sdi
ND

Gain
decent AF
lose some mass

Or get a C80

Lose
Sdi

Gain
decent af
lose a bit of mass

As mass and AF are probably winners.. then I might like it!

Have fun shooting outside with it in the sun, Sam, while dangling your bright external monitor off of the cage you'll also surely need with no VF.
Ooof.

You know im an evf nut. The joy my my r6 is excellent when running around in the sun

The r6 must stay or be replaced with an r6iii or r3.

Now. Cinema cameras. This is a bit different some sort of monitr might work. Thats what you have on the c80 and c400. Thats what you meed on a gimbal,

Thats my thought. The could replace the c200.. but mayne r6iii or r5c would be better.

Nd.. there are behind ef lens options

Cameras like the Sony A9 III and the Nikon Z9 have no problem mating with flash units. Granted the C50 is a cine camera, but still cameras without mechanical shutters offer benefits over traditional shutters when it comes to flash usage IF they have a fast enough sensor readout which the C50 seems to lack.

Yep, you are correct. The A9 III has a global shutter and is able to sync due to that fact, as I mentioned.

The Z9 is a camera I wasn't as familiar with, and apparently the Z9 has one of the fastest reading sensors available. Not a global shutter, but apparently it reads out fast enough to give you a 1/250 flash sync. Nikon has more info on that tech in some of their videos regarding the Z9, but I'm not aware of any other camera manufacturers that are able to do what Nikon is doing with their Z9 at the moment, in terms of a non-global, electronic shutter.

It still supports my point though that the C50 doesn't have the appropriate tech to sync with flash. Unfortunately that doesn't make it a great option for those of us looking for a true hybrid mirrorless that can do both video and photo. If you shoot with strobes, the C50 can't do it.

It's unfortunate since I was hoping for a true R5C replacement in some ways. But there are certainly other tools for the job. Oh well.

I think the Sony A1 has decent performance in electronic shutter mode as well. It is my view that the term "mirrorless" has been sometimes falsely linked with "shutterless" in the still camera world. Pro usage often still needs the old DSLR functionality until all of the sensors get readout speeds of the Z9 or as you state a global shutter.

But to be fair, a lower level cine camera would not be expected to read the sensor as fast as a high end still camera. They have totally different use cases. But I agree the C50 might not function well as a hybrid. But there are probably better hybrid choices even outside the flash issue.

I've got a friend with a Canon R3 - he had a problem with my Elinchrom Transmitter Pro (off camera flash trigger) where it wouldn't fire. He had the shutter set to electronic, switched over to mechanical and all sorted. I think (not sure because I don't have any mirrorless kit to test) that with a global electronic shutter the strobe sync speed is limited to around 1/200sec max?

While I haven't watched any of these "reviews" because it's the typical sponsored hype that inevitably be followed few months later with the hate videos when ppl who actually buy and use them in the real world. Jared P said the loan window was so short he didn't have time to do any real tests.

Am I the only one who thinks these cameras aren't designed to fill a need or make sense rather they're constructed with a set of features that will slot into a place in their line up. Like creating a pick truck that's has a energy efficient electric engine while it gets great mileage they made the bed half the size and its too under powered to do work.

Is it a terrible camera? No. But is there a real need for it? And who is this designed for? What constitutes a "cinema" camera? Yeah you could put this on a gimbal but that could be said about many other cameras.

With the exception of Gerald Undone, Josh Sattin and a few others YT is filled with influencers. Apparently, Nikon sends an employee along with the camera to the reviewers to assist during the short time they have the camera. Undone referred to them as "chaperones" and was able to shed his presumably due to his singular stature on YT. He gave a fairly critical review of the Nikon ZR, which I appreciated (although I pre-ordered the camera despite his caveats):
