Canon c50 announcement Sept 9

Looks like Canon's finally making a "Canon fx3". Rumored to have open gate and a 32MP sensor, which strange if it's going to be a low light performer...

Canon's XC15 from 10 years ago always reminded me of the FX3 that would come years later, but that was a fixed-lens, small chip cam.

Regardless, small - small-ish - and powerful will instantly win everyone and everything.

Open gate would make me consider this very seriously. Though Canon tends to be allergic to including IBIS in anything marketed as CINEMA. and many things I'd use open gate for would probably also need IBIS.

Price will be a big factor. If it comes in at $3000-3500 it will be an attractive option. With the tariff turmoil it will most likely be $4000 +. I'm hoping there's a s35 version in the fx30 price range with a DGO sensor, but I have a feeling Canon's going to retire one of the greatest sensors ever...

I'm very interested in whatever this camera turns out to be. I'd love something even smaller than my R5C.

I know this is going to be a cinema focused camera, but if it can also take stills I'd probably be sold...at the right price point. 😅 😅

Do you use your r5c as a b-cam to your Komodo?

I have a feeling they're going to just stick their R5II sensor in a new body with a fan. I'm not a huge fan of the new Canon aesthetic that they introduced with the c80/c400/r5II. I much prefer the look of their cameras that came out in 2020...

I have done so in the past. For awhile my A and B cam setup was exactly that, Komodo and R5C. I probably shot that combo for maybe a year or so, I'd have to double check.

Usually I'd shoot either the 8k raw in the R5C or the R5C's super35 raw and match it with the Komodo shooting in ELQ.

I already started a thread here - I'll let the admins do the merging:

I'm wondering if this will have built in ND. If it does then it might be the gimbal camera I've been looking for. Doesn't look like it's got the space though?

I'm still thinking about a C70 to match to my C300 iii, they can be had for a good price but I've been thinking for about 5 months now :D

The c70 has a great image

A third camera that I dont actually want. C80 C400 C50.

What I do want is a camera with better AF than my c200 and an EVF - and doesnt overheat like my R6

This might be a good way of getting decent ad and no overheating quite cheap.

It's a beauty. Time code port and full HDMI.

I neither know or care. I just want to be able to shoot without buying and powering an evf.

Why do I even care about upgrading my r6..? I dont know, maybe I dont or maybe the AF and no overheating I hope, and a sensible 422 codec means It is better than my C200? I dunno!

Cined has a nice review and mini doc:
The lack of a high base ISO of 12800 means to me that Canon still has the cripple hammer at the ready.

This one's from Canon...and, to me, they've lost their mojo, their color science and look (looking more like Sony every year).

It's one vid and shouldn't jump to conclusions - but, just like the video above, no noticeable difference in quality compared to the others, and just overall so bland.

Yes! That's exactly what I think. Their new crop of cameras (c80/400/r5ii and now c50) have a bland digital look that reminds me of Sony. I think it even started to look that way with the r5c. It wouldn't surprise me if there was some internal talk of emulating the Sony look. The artistry of those 2020 DGO sensors (c70/c300 MKIII) feels like a long way off from their current sensor aesthetics...

You could say that one of the positives, if that's the case, is the availability of people selling off their C70/C300 MKIII's to get the "latest and greatest" means you can pick up a used Canon with DGO for cheap nowadays.

A lot of good options nowadays, depending on what you want or need.
