Canon C100 is Announced

Simon

I am loving the ProRes quality BMCC frame grabs you posted. I am thinking that with ProRes as an on-board recording option, I might not even need the full RAW mode all that much if I end up buying a BMCC. Although, of course I'd try it out to see how I like it.

ProRes works great for me though, as I am on a Mac with Final Cut Studio (haven't messed around with FCP X yet).

Having said that, the C100 seems like it will also be a popular camera. I think in my case, I'll wait a couple years for an upgraded model (C100s), which by then could very well have both 2K/1080p up to 60 fps, and maybe even a 1080 120p mode, plus all the goodies like built-in ND's and an XF 422 codec. Right now though, with no 60p and for the price overall it just doesn't seem the best option for me.

And I'd take a AG-AC160A over the XF300 for its even smaller file sizes in AVCHD. Let's be honest, color correction in most documentaries is usually pretty light, if done at all.

However, a documentary shot on the BMC Jesus-cam would look hella impressive, you have to admit.
Personally I'd use the BMC for creative work, never a documentary. I can simply sling the XF300 in a bag, the high cap battery lasts me an several hours (though I always have a spare in case), meanwhile I have the recording being output to 2 cards at once so I have a backup. I need buttons, I have buttons programmed to the features I want and I don't want to have to faff with menus. The nice thing about the BMC is I think it will be a learning experience for Blackmagic and their next camera could end up ticking all the boxes, also it might just put pressures on other manufacturers to be more generous with their feature.

I'm looking forward to reviews on both the C100 and BMC though to see what they're like to use in practice.

Couple of things I want to add to this thread. First, why has this become a C100 v BMC thread? After all landmine has created a whole user forum for the BMC, that stuff lives over there and I can see this thread quickly denigrating into an argument.

Now with that said I think its fair to discuss this camera generally with competitors in mind. But this whole thread thus far is starting to sound like... but the BMC has this, well the C100 has this. It should be about what the C100 has and if that suits your individual needs... or not.

Simon, so buy the BMC. You don't like the C100, a camera you've never seen nor touched - we got that. Why are you even in this forum? If you don't like it, move on.
Seriously dude, it's just a camera.

For everyone else who doesn't like the specs, look, image, whatever, for the C100 - don't buy it. Simple solution.
Let the rest of us who are interested in this camera share what news and information we can find.

I did buy the BMC. It's not that I don't like the C100, but rather, I don't like Canon's conservatism and high-prices (who does?).

And the reason I said what I did is because it was a continuation from Kholi's comments...because, you know, this is a camera forum.

And, the only reason I'm bothering is to clear the FUD. I'm not even saying Magic Cam's better than C100, just that it is definitely an option as much as anything else is out there, and totally applicable in those scenarios.

I think the C100 will be a decentish deal at five thousand, when you consider that you can probably shoot with it confidently for just a few hundred more in batteries and cards.

I will most likely be using ProRes 220Mbit HQ in "FILM" mode a lot more than the RAW DNG as well. I probably wont use DNG until there is either a CineformRAW function in camera, or a program which converts the BMC's DNG to CineformRAW from GoPro (according to GoPro guys on BMCuser forums, they are working on a program with a GUI for the BMC...at the moment there is a program from GoPro to convert DNG to CineformRAW, but it works via command line prompts only).

I think the C100 will have a market, and I hope Canon at least gives uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2 to those that buy it (I think that's only fair considering the price that is being asked). If Canon at least gives that, and price it around $5000, I'm sure it will have no trouble selling. At $8000, it might be DOA. Also, considering that the C100 is not slated for release until November, many of the people Canon is attempting to target may have opted for the Sony A99, Panasonic GH3, Sony EA50, or the up and coming Sony full-frame ENG camera by then - all these cameras are due out before the C100. I would love to have seen a C100 with an EOS-M mount though - that would really tread on the toes of the FS100/FS700!

This is not just a camera forum, but a C100 forum. Certainly not a BMC forum.
Do I care if you (or anyone) like the C100 or not? Not at all, it's your own opinion. I have no stock or interest in Canon's success.

Until we know more about this camera - and you or I certainly don't know much as of today - perhaps we can hold off of the negative comments until we have facts to back it up. Perhaps we'll all be dazzled by its images. Maybe the images will look better than the BMCs, who knows?

And, as I posted on another thread, It's not going to be $8000!...so quit stating that as fact please...it's probably going to be under $7000 and as dealers, we will know by the end of next week....and I posted on the other thread, the HDMI is HDMI standard 8-bit, 4-2-2 color and the time code is not superimposed on the picture (it was a translation issue I believe).

Jim,

Any idea of the shutter speeds/angles?

Will it be possible to shoot 24p in 50 Hz countries without practicals, & tungstens, flickering?

Thanks,
Bern

If the image is great I will be buying a C100 soon. And I'll talk one of my clients into buying another two at the same time.

I might also buy a BMCC for some special uses, but couldn't work with it all the time due to skew, & the long term cost of storage.

It's billed as a cinema camera, and for that purpose, I just don't see how it competes with the FS700 in that price segment. It seems more competitive in the less than $5K segment. The C100 seems tough to swallow anywhere near $7-8K in light of the FS700.

Yeah, I want the nose to come off of the Magic Cam in exchange for an M4/3 mount so that I can PL mount it. But if it couldn't happen it really wouldn't be an issue, there are plenty of fast-enough wide angles.

Add that f2 olympus zoom with a cine rehousing to the wishlist.

Are you ok now? did you take your pills?

Woohoo another overpriced crippled camera!

I don't see any reason to spend more than 3k on a camera anymore unless you have money to burn. If you can't do great work with a $3000 camera YOU CAN'T DO GREAT WORK!

There's some truth in the latter statement, but I can see plenty of reason to spend more than $3k on a camera if it has the features that help you earn your living. Different strokes for different folks, people. There's a whole lot of camera professionals out there that do a lot more than just trying to get their micro-budget movie made. If this camera helps them at a price point that works for their business, then I'm glad it's out.

Same can be said for any camera; all have different features & compromises that some value more than others. If the C100 puts a stick in your craw, then settle down, take a breathe, and count to ten. Camera manufacturers are running a business, it's not personal. Buy what works for you; In this day and age, somebody is making it. And remember, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not necessarily yours.

Its definitely a race to the bottom in the 1080p world. By mid 2013 they will all be competing around the $1800 price point !
