The press release says $7999.

LIST PRICE...meaning you won't be paying that. The C300 had a list price of $20,000 but ended up at $15,999. It could end up at $6999 ...or less?!? We'll probably find out in a month or so....

Even if this were $5000, it makes no sense. It might make sense if it had the XF codec...or if it had 60FPS @ 720P...or if it were EOS-M mount with a free EF adapter...but this camera is an abomination - even at $5000, let alone $8000. Who on Earth is Canon trying to sell this too? According to their press release, it's for "independent videographers" - but truth be told, I think Canon have no idea who "independent videographers" actually are - and I think the vast majority would agree that "independent videographers" are a sub $4000 market (AF101, FS100, BMC). And if what is being said about the GH3, Sony A99, Sony Full-frame ENG and EA50 hold true, then this camera doesn't stand a chance amongst "independent videographers". I can see it being successful amongst Canon fanboys...but I think even they are gonna think twice before investing in such a over-priced, lacklustre camera...

The initial press release for the C300 said $20,000 and it came in at $16,000. Probably because blogs like this one were unrelenting in their criticism of value. IF it had 4:2:2 out it is bordering on acceptable value and if it is 4:2:0 out it has much more limited value.

I guess I'll put you in the group that thinks the C300 should be $5000 and the Alexa should be $10,000.......

No, I think you should put me in the group that bought a Blackmagic Cinema Camera.

Great camera but not at all practical for many people especially broadcasters. I love the BMC but for reality and doc work I will take the C100 (at $6K) over it in a heart beat and this is coming from a GH2 owner who hasn't been impressed by anything Canon has done.

Different strengths that suite very different users.

A documentary film maker or broadcaster in the UK would surely go for the XF300/305 instead.

The situation might be different in the states.

I gotta agree with this. The BMC looks like it will be an amazing camera, but for what I use my video cameras for, the C100 makes a whole lot more sense. I need the run and gun convenience. Different tools for different jobs.

I may have to sell my FS100 for this camera, assuming the image is at least comparable (as is the price). I like the form factor, the ND filters, the dual slot SDs, wave form monitors, the tiltable LCD screen. But the Sony NEX-EA50's form is really nice, too. Hmmm...

Here in North America the image speaks. Most broadcasters don't worry about the actual bitrate if the image is solid.

I still can't believe they sacrificed ND's in order to allow it to take photos. Makes no sense to me at all.

If the C100 nears the predicted $6K mark I wouldn't hesitate to buy it over the NEX-EA50 given the extra features.

...and if it has a clean HDMI out, then by a recorder and forget the internal codec. The codec is there to separate the models. 15% smaller than the c300 is great. If this has the same engine as the c300, then count me in.
