Canon 7D with Premiere CS3: should I bother?

Hi folks:

I hope this isn't a dead horse; I searched the forums and googles and didn't find the exact answers I need.

I just bought a Canon 7D, which I'll be using for photo and video equally as often. I've been a hobby videographer for several years and got into photography about a year ago. I've been editing multi-cam concert shoots and travel videos with CS3 on my existing computer:

Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit
Intel Core 2 CPU 6420 @2.13GHZ
4 GB RAM (3.25 usable)

It's not the fastest, but it's done the trick for my needs so far.

However, I just imported some of the Canon 7D footage into Premiere CS3 and it's pretty much turned to molasses. The files play back "okay" in WMP and VLC, but there's still some 'jerkiness' in the playback. QT player is absolutely useless for these files.

So, long story short:

-is there a recommended workflow for importing/editing my 7D footage in CS3? Converting to another format, perhaps? Offline editing?

-is it worth it to upgrade my system to 64-bit to accommodate CS5? I've looked at other threads that recommend 'affordable' system designs, but that's a little out of my league at the moment: I just blew a lot on my 7D and the accessories.

-do I really need to spend $1700 on a computer? Are the Adobe system requirements for CS5 realistic, in that you'll be up and editing with no rendering times with a system to those specs?

Install DNxHD and then MPEG Streamclip. I use CS3 on a slower computer using less RAM running XP. It works nicely. There are some threads about using this codec and MPEG here. PerroneFord, in particular, has contributed.

Hmm...I think I'd prefer to continue editing with CS3, rather than introduce a new program into the mix. I've tried the MPEG Streamclip option, as well as the trial version of NeoScene and am not sold on either option. Both programs produced AVI's that still required some rendering in Premiere. I've tried a few different project settings with the same results: jittery playback, slow loading, several crashes, and rendering each file before use.

Could it be my video card? NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS

I'm having this same issue! although I'm editing in CS4.1 with a recently upgraded computer with windows 7 (64-bit) 8GB of RAM, 940GB Raid-0, and a Geforce GTX 470 graphics card. I can edit using the trial version of neoscene nicely with no jitters, but when I try to encode them out to anything other than a windows media preset, or a Cineform AVI preset it becomes choppy! Any one know of any good export settings that will work? Ive tried almost all of them :(

Thanks.

Neoscene worked. I'm not crazy about the added converting/rendering steps, but I guess it's better than dishing out for a new computer and CS5 upgrade.

GavinAbe's link looks like the the best/cheapest way to go. Glad I didn't pay for the full version of Neoscene yet.
