Canon 7D VS Nikon D800 Low Light High ISO Comparison

It is true that video is not my specialty but I been working in what I would call a much more advance imaging world. At least until now (being the fault of the manufacturers) things like raw format and color science have been much more advance in the photography world. It is only now that raw for example is coming to the video world at large. It has been for nearly a decade in the photography world. I have been grading raw for the last 7 years from a Nikon d100 to a D800 and even a 7D. You can see a some small sample of my work here.

I have also contributed here and on personal-view. As you can see I did not limit myself only to buy Nikon. When they where completely lacking before the D800 I bought a 7D and a Gh2. I try to do thorough test to see what is best for me. I am am not saying the d800 is the end all be all dslr in video. But seeing all the exaggeration going about it compared to some other camera is a bit too much. The banding thing is not related to the picture profile. If you want you can do a one stop DR profile. So tell me where would the banding come from. It is a DR thing because the DR gives 12 stop DR in a 8bit file. It is a bit of a stretch and can cause some banding. In fact I don't know one 8 bit camera that does not show banding in a large and flat gradient, you can have some noise to mask it a bit.

The colors wen't wonky this way: Guy standing in daylight. Skin color is grey with white balance set to daylight. That's just... wrong. Maybe there was another setting somewhere (we had two D800's for two days of shooting).

Just a little example of natural light in extreme condition (tropical island sun) that I have done recently. I don't see any grey skin tone one you have a little curve and saturation. In fact I don't see anyone at least in the photography world complaining about the Nikon color science. Nikon would not be where it is if it was the case. It is only in the video world where you have much more Canon users with the success of the 5d2 that here that. The last thing is that all these photos where done in Jpeg. I find the jpeg to be extremely good with very good DR (about 12 stop from some reviews). Before in some shot I was using raw but no more nowadays (short delivery time for wedding couples coming from Europe mainly).

The last thing is that some shot have some flash like the one of the wedding ceremony. Because it is blazing sun behind and no amount of DR would give a good rendition of the foreground and background. From what I have tested the rendition is very close from the jpeg and the video, but I will have to test it a bit more and post the result. If need be I can show you 50 other galleries, where I don't have any skin tone problem even under very harsh light.

What is this banding stuff supposed to be? I had both the D800 and the 5dmarkIII and in videos, the 5dmarkIII had significantly less banding than the D800. In videos 5dmarkIII is simply, a lot better.

For stills the D800 is better for studio work and one shot landscape stuff. 5d mark III is better for event shooting. I shoot about 1000-2000 shots per event. I really liked the DR & mp of the D800 but in reality...the 5dmarkIII is no slouch either. And it's also considerably faster which is important when shooting events.

Lol yea ok. There is banding on the 5d mark III above 6400 ISO that is a fact. I have seen it, I also have seen the ISO on the D800 at 12800 and no banding whatsoever.

the d800 has more resolution, 3 shooting modes and 6fps exact same as the 5 mark III! Just need a battery grip. All canons exaggerate the reds and over saturate them, images are always too warm and red. The d800 has a more flat picture and higher dynamic range by over 2 stops. Go read dxomark the d800 is the highest rated dslr ever made. There is a reason for that.

The d800 will do everything I need it to, and I will be buying it and also a d4. I have already made up my mind. I have been doing this along time. I know what works and what doesn't.

If you don't like the d800 go to a canon board but don't slam my thread with canon fanboy crap. I shot canon for over 8 years and I am not afraid to admit that Nikon has stepped up and made a huge advance and are delivering the goods this year.
