Canon 7D - the next sweet-spot in price / features?

Thanks! I guess Google is truly our friend. It says early Oct and in Japan, ouch! This means back ordered in the USA until Christmas? First I waited for the GH1 that never came now I will have to wait months for the 7D? It's as bad as waiting for the Scarlet....:crybaby:

I think that the scarlette will be a long ways off, especially since Canon and Nikon have started up the vdslr wars. Also I think it's time for Barry to open a 7D forum

When it comes to SD vs. CF cards, remember that this codec seems to be pushing over 40mbps. It'll take a high-end SDHC card to do that well, whereas many CF cards can do that quite safely.

This is definitely a camera to watch. Should be interesting to see how it's rolled out.

wow, the dog/frisbee example is pretty impressive!!! i didn't see jello. if the image is as filmic (or should i say red-like) as the 5dII, and it doesn't have the mud issues of the gh1, this will be a badass camera that will dominate the war (for now).

regarding FF, it's too big!!! the DOF is way too shallow for movies with a FF sensor.

i can't wait for small video cams with big chips to hit market. i love how the red looks but i kinda hate shooting with it. it's clunky and has issues and most of the time, 4k is just way way overkill. post is a pain, etc. i would feel differently if red would implement the 2k scaled mode they have been promising for years... 2k is basically 1080p and much easier to deal with. but losing your big chip in the process sucks...

an hvx200 size, s35 chip, dedicated video cam shooting avc-intra or xdcam or whatever at resolution and framerate of choice, up to 1080p while still using the whole chip will be the next major game changer...

Those pre-order lists went REALLY fast everywhere. So yeah, backordered. I've got a friend checking in Japan for me but he said October as well. He put us on a Pre-Order list there just in case.

I'm in for two (about 30 min before Kholi :)) but might try to pick up a third jap version if I can get one sooner, I'll bet people will be waiting until after Christmas to get one. The 5Dii was scarce for a while and this is $1k cheaper with possibly better video. I think the demand for this cam could be a minimum of 3-5x greater than the gh1, the 4/3rds thing turned off a lot of pro still photographers who want 24p video in a dslr. I guess we will know for sure in a few weeks.

Yep, the 7D will be the most desired vdslr to ever come to market from the way it is looking.

So this is a 35mm frame sensor, which is just below full-frame, right? And much larger than the four thirds sensor? Please correct me since I suck at this stuff.

Any ideas if this has auto-focus on the video side and if it is faster than the GH-1?

What about a flip-out LCD, since the MKII did not have that. It's a great thing to have for event videographers in the GH-1.....

As for the CF vs SDHC, I wish they went with SDHC, not only because I am using a HMC-150 with it right now, but because the new Mac Book Pro's have the integrated SDHC card slot in them. It is faster too, from what I have read.

Still just a rumor, but intriguing none the less:

Christian Fletcher is a well known professional photographer from Western Australia and has been a Canon fan for many years – his camera is a Canon 5D MKII. He shoots mainly landscape / panorama. This is what he wrote on his blog a week ago (direct post link):

I type this from my death bed. Don’t worry no need to send get well gifts but the gallery will accept them.

I am privy to some pretty cool news for Nikon users, that cool in fact that I might have lots of Canon gear going cheap. Can’t spread the news yet but let’s just say it will be tipping the scales in nikons favour.

I answered these two questions by myself after reading a few more posts. Looks like no auto-focus in video mode still and no flip out LCD.....

This is equal to a super35mm frame. Which is the size of a 35mm motion picture frame. Which is smaller then a full frame sensor.

35mm film is 36x24mm (width x height). In a still camera the film runs horizontally so you get that size of an image.

When you shoot 35mm film in a motion picture camera, the film runs vertically through the camera. So your width is only 24mm wide and your height is 18mm.

Any ideas if this has auto-focus on the video side and if it is faster than the GH-1?

It has no auto focus during video recording.

It does not have a flip out LCD. I don't know how many events you can do with a camera like this with a max record time of only 12 minutes per clip in HD. If you're going to do long-form shooting you're better off with a dedicated video camera. These camera are better for shorter clips such as you would use in shooting a film or commercial.

It would be nice if it had both. I prefer SDHC myself these days, as it's cheaper and more readily available. But I'm not very familiar with speed differences in regards to CF vs SDHC. I believe CF is faster though.

"full frame" = 36x24mm.

The 7D uses an APS-C-sized sensor, at 24mm x 18mm. Same size as movie film, and half the size of "full frame".

Four Thirds uses about 18mm x 13mm.
