Canon 7D - the next sweet-spot in price / features?

"The exposure of the movie can be controlled in Manual mode allowing full control of shutter speeds and apertures. It is possible to select frame rates from: 30 (29.97), 25, and 24 (23.976), with 60 (59.94) and 50 available at 720p. ISO can be set automatically or manually in the range (100-6400) and is expandable to 12800. EOS 7D also allows users to trim and cut their movies."

HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE :)

What do you mean by poor mans 5DMKII? You can only shoot @ 30p on 5DMKII.
canon 7D you can shoot @
1920 x 1080 (29.97, 25, 23.976 fps)
1280 x 720 (59.94, 60 fps)
640 x 480 (59.94, 60 fps)
and it will be pal ntsc switchable !

I have a 500D (1920 x 1080 20p, 1080 x 720 30p) and have 17-40 f4, 50mm f1.4, 24-70 f2.8, and 70-200 f2.8 and I think that I'll get 7D rather than the 5DMKII.

I agree . There will be alot of 5d owners buying the 7d . This is very good news , thinking ahead to their dedicated aps video camera . They seem to be off and running . Nikon shot themselves in the foot for their "leaving good enough alone" philosophy.

i'm selling off my canon hv20 and 40D. I have to say, RED and Scarlet really gave a kick in the ass to Nikon, Canon, etc to start putting serious video features in there DSLR.

What if Canon released the 5d mark II 24/25p update after the release of the 7d? 720 60p should probably require the dual digic processor, but 24p and 25p should not be a poblem. Maybe they will wait for the response on this and then release the rumoured Iron Man 2 update?

This is still not a FF sensor. It is a mid line camera placed below the 5DII. I would not go off half cocked without looking at the output compared to the 5DII at 30p. Granted it has more versitility, but look at the files it produces. Too soon to tell.
I like FF and will stick with what I know.

Not even the Red One has a FF sensor. The 35mm negative size sensor means nothing. The 7D has a 35mm motion picture frame size sensor and that is perfect. Especially for the price.

CF and SD, ease of use as a vid device, and implementation of autofocus during rec

Im with Jester, does anybody out there know about the specifics of CF v SD media right now? For example, what is the going rate in your area for a 32gb piece of CF or SD? i found 32gb class 6 SD cards of good quality on Newegg.com recently for about $95US...

Also, I am interested in how many out there are still enticed by the GH1's eyepiece features that make it easier to actually film events, interviews etc- like the swing out LCD, as-long-as-you-want recording, (albeit on low-ish bitrate AVCHD) and one thing I really like, a viewfinder- I feel personally that my compositions will probably benefit from the stabilization of being connected to my eye. I know about the zacutos' out there, but this is an attractive thing for me.

Autofocus that is functional is also important. I know this is something that the manufacturers have been scrambling to really implement, but it seems like panasonic has done some things right in terms of their contrast detect systems. It might just be the combination / elimination of certain features (no mirror?!? smaller sensor= less data to deal with? :D) but to me as a video device, sometimes these things become the weakest link. I saw some d300s focussing videos and was instantly turned off. I don't want to look at a wavering focus search in my FCP timeline - you know, when its too late.

I come from a serious family of nikon users and teachers! its tough, but I am thinking of going canon, but I respect all of your opinions on this forum- what do allYa'll think?

cheers-

I predict people will get their hand on it, find something wrong with it and the chorus of complaints will start again. Remember when the GH1 were announced and people ecstatically declare it as the second coming?

It happens with every camera and every accessory that comes out and will never stop. It'll always just be part of it, and that's okay too.

Jeezus. Give me a break. Red, and the 3D renders and press releases of Scarlet did nothing of the sort.

Knowing that these VDSLR's are only going to get better, and sooner or later, I am thinking Canon will do it first, they are going to put an APC sized sensor and a dedicated video camera, and assuming the codec is good, Scarlet, if it ever does come out, is going to have a lot of competition. Hell, it has a lot of competition now. Interesting times.
