Canon 7D Mark II

If Magic Lantern can get this baby shooting raw at 1080/60p, i'll buy one in an instant.

Say what you like about Canon, the sensor produces a beautiful image and colour

And that's what really matters. Specs are nice, but at the end of the day the only thing that counts is how the image looks. ..and yeah, there are other cameras that can shoot raw or log that you can grade to your preferred look, but getting the right image and color right out of the camera does wonders for your workflow. That's why everyone loves the Alexa and C300 that can't shoot super slomoraw4k.
I don't know if I'm going to wind up with a 7DII as I don't shoot as much sports photos as I used to, but for sports it sure looks like a great stills camera.

The selling point I see for the video crowd:
Canon (no need for new glass)
1080p60
headphone jack
clean HDMI

Also, APS-C is closer to Super 35mm than an 8 perf "full frame" "vista vision" 5Diii sensor, so that is another selling point if that matters to you. But really we'll need to see how it performs with high ISO, moire, aliasing, overheating, etc.

Canon at least has their C series one can move up to if you're looking for more cinematic/video form factors and 4K recording. So long as you can afford it. Which personally I cannot. But it's there if/when I can. Nikon on other other hand is less forgivable. There is nowhere higher to go than their 1080p DSLRs. While the same is true of m4/3 like the GH4, at least they are pushing their specs to the extreme.
$20K for the 4K C500 or $10K for the new 4K Sony PXW-FS7 .

I know everything said in the thread is true about Canon. They are really a copier company disguised as a cameras company. They make solid gear but they are frustrating to me and I do not find myself being excited about their products anymore. The approach of doing as little as they can get away with has worn through for me. I enjoy the 5D II & III for my still work and via magic lantern I really like the MKIII for video. Would I buy a C300 right now? No, not at the price it is listed at because it will not retain its value. It was underspec'ed at its release and is looking tough going forward. The market is just moving too fast for the 'release a camera every three years' mentality. I don't know how the still world is seeing the 7D but its only hope of making an impact in the video world is via magic lantern RAW if possible.

You can easily release a camera ever three years, but it has to be the right camera w/ the right specs.

The GH4 was ahead of the curve & if they don't release a GH5 for 3 years, they'll probably still have done well with the GH4.

This 7Dii would've been nice in 2011 or 2012, but today at the end of 2014 there are so many other cameras out there that offer so much more it really only appeals to legacy users. Anyone who is willing to jump ship there are a lot of other camera makers who will happily take the new users.

Back in February last year I made a note of what Canon's Masaya Maeda said in an interview (I forget where it came from) regarding the 7D's successor; he said it "will incorporate a certain number of innovative technologies. We will not be putting out a product with merely better specs, but one that has evolved into new territory." Can't help feeling that he was describing a different camera from the 7DII we see here.

I think some of you need to step back and think about the target audience.... Still shooters that require ultra fast AF and burst.

You're right of course, but they also missed out on selling to more people than the stills only guys. Like others have mentioned, they want you to move up to a C100, but that logic only works in a world where they have no competition but themselves. It's an entire sub-market they accidentally created and now are handing over to Panasonic and Sony now maybe Samsung.

Well maybe Canon should release a 7DC for $3000 that does 4k with clog. The challenge for Canon is that most would buy that and not the C100 if they did that, but if they don't a lot of us are already going to other brands.

Here's what I would do if I were Canon:

-Create the 7DC 4k camera for $3000.
-Lower the price of the C100 to $4000 (you still get the better ergonomics/xlr/nd etc).
-Lower the price of the C300 to $7500 to compete with the Sony FS7.

I'm done with Canon. I had a brief foray into Canon territory due to being interested in the controls for video and Magic Lantern. However, I have jumped ship in favor of Panasonic. Granted, my interests lie primarily with video.

Video comparing the 7Dii to 5Diii to 70D. Pretty impressive that the 7Dii holds it's own against the 5Diii. It also shows that the 7Dii has a new chip & didn't re-use the same chip from the 70D.

Personally I really wish this camera was about 30-40% cheaper when you look at the price & offerings of the GH4 & NX1. But I can see the 7Dii being good for people who want to stick with Canon & don't need full frame (or just want 5Diii ISO & moire performance at half the price).

Can't really have this camera cost less though. I mean Canon could one day release a T3i type camera with this sensor/processor, but without the burts/AF, for less. But this camera is fundamentally for something else.

I'm guessing they easily could have it cost less, just why would they if they can charge more?

Probably great for the still guys who this camera really appeals to, it just sucks that what it offers to us video guys it falls short (IMHO) for the price.

The camera is expected to cost just $1499, the same in Euros and on the basis of what I saw today completely annihilates the Canon 7D Mark II in terms of the technology under the hood.
This is the camera I had expected Canon to make with the 7D Mark II. That it comes from Samsung, is very ominous, considering the effect Samsung’s technology has already had on the TV market for various Japanese companies. If they do the same with consumer cameras, Canon will lose huge market share.
