Canon 7d L&T on FCP 7.0.3 on OS X 10.6.4 - Unsupported even w/plug in

Hey, Sorry to ask this question that seems to have been asked a lot, but I have done all I can, read a ton of posts and it still doesn't work. I can't find the exact problem I face in searching on the older posts of this forum

I just downloaded and installed yesterday the Canon EOS plug in for 7d mov files. On the L&T screen, I can see the plug in, called Canon E1 EOS Movie along with my AVCHD plug ins and other plug ins. I can choose ProRes LT. However it still does not see supported files. I get the same message as before the plug in, which is that there are no files with the supported format. I've tried pointing to the top level folder, second level folder and the files themselves.

I can transcode to MPEG-4 MOV using MPEG Streamclip, and it comes in fine, but I have no idea if this is the same format as the L&T does, since it does not show up in Prores, and the Streamclip does not have a choice to go to Prores.

Has anyone experienced this? Any ideas? Luckily in the meantime I'm converting using Neoscene and editing the AVI in Vegas just fine. But I do want to get this working in FCP. Compressor takes hours to convert this stuff. Neoscene on Windows 7 takes 33 minutes. Quite dramatic. I assume the plug in makes it much faster than Compressor.

Sure MPEG Streamclip can do ProRes422, any flavor. Use the batch window (cmd B), drag and drop footage in that, click OK to the popup for "Export to Quicktime", then click the Compression drop down menu for codecs, pick the ProRes you want. If you have a multi core machine, set the batch window to the number of "Simultaneous tasks" that matches your cores, or max it at 4 for higher cores.

I know the L&T plugin can add time stamps to each clip, but MPEG Streamclip is fast, simple and the settings once saved after the first time makes for a no nonsense workflow.

Those instructions worked. Thanks!

Those instructions worked. Thanks!

That got it THANKS. It is very fast (36 MB test file in 50 seconds to Prores LT).

The question still stands though, why would the plug in not work? I cannot get it to work, and it seems like it should.

Ok. I just got it to work on my laptop. Same FCP version. So it's something messed up with FCP and the rest of the system on my Mac Pro...sheesh. You'd think this was Windows! Wonder what has gotten wrapped around the axle on the MacPro that isn't on the MBPro? One clue? The laptop is running 10.5.8 and the Mac Pro is running 6.x The plot sickens. Maybe I'll fall back to the older version of the Canon L&T software... just to see if it works. It's supposed to.

Okay, it may be something totally unrelated to FCP.

It's Canon's responsibility to make this work with FCP, and whatever OS, not Apple's responsibility to make FCP work with the plug in.

good luck

A great reason to use the Canon plugin is that it makes Time Of Day Timecode on the clips based on the cameras clock. Very useful.

Yes, it is Canon's problem, not Apple's. But the point I was making was that it WORKS on my MacBook Pro laptop, running the same version of FCP but an earlier version of the OS. And Canon claims to support both OS's. So I was only pointing out that it seems to be a problem I am having with that version of the MacOS, not FCP nor Canon (since it claims to support it). It is not impossible that the recent security updates I downloaded from Apple might have screwed up the Epson drivers, as I have not used the printer since before those came out. Anyone else had any problems since last week's security update? (they were updated on 11/11)
