Canon 60D or Nikon d5300 for Making Movies

For your budget and the fact that you intend to shoot mostly video, I would personally buy the GH3 rather than the 60D OR the D5300. I have a D5200 and it's a great camera with a nice image, but I do a lot photos with it as well.

For video centered work, the GH series are kind of in class by themselves (when just including DSLRs and "stills" cameras).
Pros of a GH3 vs Canon OR Nikon Dslrs:
You can adapt just about any lens system, the codecs are better, the slow motion options are better, the working VF in video mode is a HUGE plus and a cost saver, the time lapse options are nice, the body is weather sealed, the AF is better (if you need it in a pinch) the body is of higher quality than the lower tier Nikon/Canon bodies AND the whole system was designed from day one to include video. I've shot on both a GH cam and several DSLRs and the GH just feels more complete for video.

Gh3 is not very tempting to me. I wouldve loved to get the gh4 but its out of my budget.

Not sure why it wouldn't be tempting...it'll destroy the 60D in just about every video category and is 90% of what the GH4 is. I'm not one to speak in absolutes about what is often subjective, but for video - there is really no comparison, the Canon models have fallen behind, other than the MK3 or ML hacks.

The 60D does have a ML hack! And shoots Raw video .. Tho for 10 seconds only but it'll still be usable for filming.

the 60D doesn't shoot RAW video in any useful way, if you ask me: too low a resolution, from a too small portion of the sensor

still, I don't like the GH series: they indeed are in a class of their own, meaning they're the kings of sharpness, but I'm not a fan of their image, overall (I'm DR-obsessed, not sharpness-obsessed)

back to lenses: can't you get the samyangs through ebay? (btw they are also sold as rokinon, bower, falcon, etc)

Thank You Samuel. :D even i think they are sharp but i dont like their image!

I'm not trying to plug my videos, but have at look at a few vids I shot on the g6, it's a great camera, and it's about all I use now, I have a 5d2, t3i, gh2, and a bunch of video camera all collecting dust, the g6 is just amazing for the price, size and versatility. It can look very filmic if you want, or more of a sharp videoish look, it's up to you. Here's a link to a video.

I would look into the Sony A6000. It seems like it could be a D5300 in a smaller, mirrorless body with zebras and peaking. This means potential of a great S35 image in a really small form-factor that can take a very wide array of lenses.

I have not seen any good testing of the camera though, so only take this a tip for something to check out.

the a6000 sounds really interesting but I'd need some more tests and reviews before I make my mind about it
even if it's already showing its age vs the new entrants, I still love my 5N (and I've seen today that it sells for almost nothing on ebay)

If it (a6000) had a 3,5mm mic line in it would be so much easier to work with something like a zoom.

Amazing vid! The transcend one lookd great tbh. Couldnt watch the other one as its not available in my country -_- anyways ill look into it.. Its way cheaper than anything mentioned over here..

that it has the same aliasing/moire and lack of detail as my 4-years-old T2i
(so, exactly the same as what I think of the 60D)

Soo ive decided to buy the 60D because it gives much more options for video. Just going out and playing with both the cameras a little helped a lot! Nikon has the sensor but it seems like they dont to be known as the dslr camera for great video.. The sharpness .. The colors n the DR are great! But the operator cannot tweak the settings as much n get the desired results! The interface is awful.. Its a pain to use!

I dont see anyone recommending the 70D.. Which tbh is very ssurprising. What do you all think of the 70D??

The 300$ difference between 60D and 70D (if buy new) is an amount of money I would gladly pay for the Dual Pixel AF only. Apart from that, the 70D also offers:
Better sensitivity and cleaner video at high ISOs.
Better codec options (IPB-All-I)
3X perfectly usable (especially with sharp lenses) crop mode.
Touch screen (in combination with AF is excellent)
wi-fi
And a bunch of photography upgrades which I cant even remember...

Of course the decision and the money are yours...but if you insist in bying the 60D...at least dont buy it new...and save the cash for other stuff..
Just a friendly advise:)

Haha thanks iyrov. Really appreciate it. Going to buy one tomorrow. I will just use all the three a little and then decide what i prefer.
