Canon 5d + zoom h4n

Hey first off sorry if this is posted here already. I am very new here. Anyways it should be a fairly quick answer.

I have a zoom h4n + a shotgun mic. I was wondering if it was possible to have the audio coming from the shotgun mic going into the zoom, and from there having the zoom to the 5d. My main reason for wanting to do this is because I hate having to dub the audio in in post. I have tried pluraleyes and I feel it still takes a while to do so. If there is a way to eliminate that whole step that would make my life so much easier. I first thought a head phone to headphone jack would work but I wasn't getting any audio. I then tried XLR to 3.5 jack (3.5 jack obviously going into the mic port in the 5d) but I still got nothing.

Hopefully I explained myself! Thanks in advance.

We use a simple stereo cable splitter from the Zoom H4n headphone socket that goes to :

1) Headphones for monitoring - this way we know there is good audio coming down the wire!
2) A lead that goes in to the mic input of the 5D2.

Works like a treat - but we never actually use the audio recorded on the 5D2 - EVER. We always use the audio from the Zoom and only ever use the 5D2 audio for sync via PluralEyes.

why bother with the zoom in that case? why wouldn't you just take the shotgun and go directly to the camera via xlr to mini cable? the results would be the same.

I have tried what you are thinking but with no luck.

You use the Zoom because it has a cleaner amplifier than the camera. By using the Zoom H4n you can turn the camera audio gain all the way down (1 - 3 clicks above off is best). As previouosly mentioned you do need to use a -25db pad cable to lower the Zoom's Line level output down to the Mic level that the camera is set up to receive. You can use a splitter between the Zoom H4n and the camera to monitor the signal. There is a cable available that is specifically designed for this.

Hello My Name is Mr. McCoy and I just wanted to know do you still have to sync audio with this method?

You would not have to sync if you use the -25pad cable and you have your Zoom and camera set up properly. The in-camera gain should be turned down as low as possible (1 - 5 clicks up from 0).
