The more I see, the more confuse I'm :undecided . I'm about to buy a new camera but at this point I don't know exactly where to go. Want a love from Canon 5D is depth of field but it don't handle like a video camera. What I like about Sony is the abillity of crank and over crank options. Now the final judge: image quality, work flow, artifact, skew, etc, etc.

I'll aprecciate all you comments

You will get a lot of answers to this. It all comes down to the type of work you do.

They both have great image quality, some say the EX-3 has a "better" image. But if you need really shallow DOF, the 5D can't be beat.

On the other hand, if you need to run and gun with good audio, the 5D is lacking a bit.

The best option is to wait if you can as this space is going to heat up towards the end of the year when the best of both worlds start to hit the market.

Well what do you intend to do with the camera? The EX3 will be a more versatile camera, for sure. If shallow DOF is the only reason why you're considering a 5D, and if shallow DOF is not a deal-breaker, then I would say that the EX3 is the better choice. For shallow DOF, you can use a 35mm adapter.

If you can wait until the end of the year, then the recently announced Panasonic AF100 would really be the best choice for you.

My mainly work is TV commercials, documentaries and ocaccionally TV shows. I wish can afford to buy both and take advantage of each one, but That's not possible for now and can't wait much longer.

Then I'm sure that you could afford both a Canon T2i and a Sony EX1. Then you'd have the best of both worlds and even save some money.

if you need a camera for movie , rembember DSLR are NOT cameras.
Juste the fact that a canon DSLR cannot shoot longer than few minutes should give you an idea.

Yeah ! and a Panavision with 400ft of film in it cant shoot for longer than a few minutes - thats not a camera either I suppose

On the Ex1 v the canon

IMO the canon is prettier IF you are seriously dedicated to mastering it AND you are prepared to get some decent extras the canon is not the cheap option, my canon rig cost twice my bare Ex1

The Ex is sharper and simpler

Seems to me that you have never used film or shot an actual movie before. Do you know how fast, expensive and generally actual film directors shoot for?

Do you have any idea how much 12 minutes of film stock cost? Just like the other poster said get an Ex1 and a T2i.

I agree it's down to what you want, so I'd say the best thing is to write a list of the functions and usages that are important to you and see which bests fits that.

Me for example I was also obsessed with beautiful images, so when I had my Ex1 I always had my Letus Extreme on the end. That was what I wanted, rarely did I use the naked camera.

I got my 5d b/c I felt it gave me all the functionality of the Ex1/Letus in a tiny, discreet and simple to use package. The image is 90% there, with it's own advantages, and was a worthwhile tradeoff.

I bought it, and then subsequently sold my Ex1 and I feel it was the right decision for me - all about what you're going to use it for etc.

This is a really bizarre comparison, TBH.

The prices are completely different and serve completely different functions.

If you can afford an EX3, go ahead and get yourself an EX1 with adapter. And then sock whatever money you have left away to save up for the Mark 5DII.

But an either or between an 8K cam and a 3K cam doesn't make any sense.

Ok I 'll buy the Ex3 for now y save money to buy canon 5D later as a `B camera.
Now what do you think about the Adaptimax to use Nikon or canon lenses on EX3? has anyone had the chance to play with it??

Why not the EX1 AND the T2i or 7D? Why only the EX3? I really don't understand why you insist on choosing between a DSLR and an ENG camcorder, instead of buying BOTH a DSLR and an ENG camcorder. The EX3 is exactly the same camera as the EX1, except for the form factor and lens options. But clearly form factor must not be important to you. With the EX3, you'll be forced to use lenses designed only for smaller chips, and those lenses won't be cheap. I just don't see how that's much better than the EX1's fixed lens. Could you please clarify for us what you intend to do with the camera and why the EX3 appeals to you so much?

The Adaptimax will make SLR lenses very telephoto.

Don't buy an EX1/EX3 and an adaptor. Instead of a 35mm adaptor buy a 5D/7D. You'll be able to shoot in MUCH lower light than with the adaptor. (been there, done that)

I am with those who suggest both an EX-1 and a DSLR. You get the best of both worlds at the price of and EX-3 (or even less).

lets keep the flow positive guys,.Maybe he is not familiar with the film world.
Inform him, don't insult him,

They could've filmed the last HOUSE w/ an Ex1/3, but choose the MarkII.

As I would. Hands down. If you gave me a EX1 free, I'd still buy the MarkII.

To be honest, I'd pick the T2 or 7D or GH1 over the EX1/3. But I shoot only narratives and can take the time. Right tool for the the job, you know?

That said, for a pure run and gun, doc, or news gathering film, the Sony wins.

Hands down.

Best tool for the money for the time for the job.
