Whew! Your title says "5D Mark IIII" lol
i was about to say...didn't canon just release the Mark III?" lol

I took advantage of that fact:

Thanks for taking time out to do this, that was cool. GH2 is looking damn good.
rolling shutter skew is still apparent on the 5D3, I was thinking it would be a lot less noticeable.
That was the latest Driftwood hacked GH2 right? what's the bitrate on that?
GH2 keeps calling out to me!

nice test, thanks
I still don't like how this 5D3 thing is looking...

you shot all-Intra and didn't say anything, so... 8-bit 4:2:0 confirmed, I guess?

thanks for that. What is clear to me is how very difficult it is to hand-hold the GH2. This is a camera you are comfortable with and yet it has the micro shakes and serious jello ( I know you were trying to max jello and shakes on both cams). You didn't indicate how you were shooting the 5D, a Zacuto finder or some other apparatus?
The 5D does look a bit softer but not that much, handled that guy's stripes OK. The GH2 makes a phenomenal image it just is too difficult to hand hold (and over-sharpened)
Great test
thanks
Bill

The 5D had the battery grip on it, so even if the Zacuto will fit (which I have), I don't have the gorilla plate for the grip, so I wouldn't have been able to make it work anyway. The Canon is definitely easier to hand-hold compared to the GH2.

If I wanted a video with the qualities of a Full Frame sensor, the 5D Mark III is simply a no-brainer upgrade. However, the GH2 is equally as good with the hack outside of the Full Frame look and rolling shutter, and you can save quite a bit of money sticking with/going to it. The lenses also get more expensive when you go Full Frame too, so the cost of the Mark III isn't just the $3k camera body.

Do you feel the GH2 provides a superior image to the 5D III, assuming price wasn't a variable? Because upgrading my full frame set to a 5D III and my full frame set to a GH2 wouldn't be a huge difference in price b/c I'd have to buy a bunch of wide angle lenses for the latter.

I'm worried the 5D III will provide noticeably less resolution than the GH2.

I think the GH2 still edges out the 5D in terms of overall quality. I shot something (that I unfortunately cannot show) last Saturday using Quantum Orion 4d in 1080p30 at 1600 ISO, run and gun type shooting, and I was very worried how it would turn out.

Got the footage home and was simply blown away by how good it looked. Really clean too for 1600 ISO, though ETC mode got pretty noisy.
