Canon 5d mark iii improved- olpf removed for higher resolution

This is pretty much wht the other side of the fence was trying to get at. You can always soften an image and still have it look pleasant, but the opposite isn't really true (at least to me.). The OLPF removal could really prove to be beneficial, I'm just SUPER curious as to why neither James nor Andrew have posted ANYMORE footage. Andrew hasn't even posted a frame.

I understood their point, however as long as the initial blur isn't too extreme, quite a bit of detail can be made clear with post-sharpening (most cameras have in-camera sharpening enabled). You can prove it to yourself by applying a Gaussian blur in Photoshop followed by a sharpen. As long as the blur isn't too extreme, the image can be sharpened back to near what it was.

Even after the NAB announcements, there's nothing to really replace the 5D3 (full frame at that price). Post sharpening works good enough for now.

Its interesting to note that the maxmax fellow stated that they didn't see how removing the OLPFs would affect video. A useful test would be to pull the vibration connector and test the camera (to see if software processing is changing).

Well, with that response from MaxMax I'm gonna guess the 2 cameras that they are working are Andrews and James's. It's been quite a while since we've seen any more footage from a 5dmk3 with OPLF removed.

lol; hopefully there's a happy ending. It didn't make sense pulling just one OLPF; replacing both with proper components (IR & ICF (?)) and hooking back up the dust system sounds reasonable. If after all that trouble video doesn't provide more resolution (line chart!), then we'll know something is up with the dust sensor connector changing software behavior (to the delight of the firmware hack fans).

I still say leave the camera alone, as it is and as it's designed, and post sharpen to you're liking. I like what I see so far with it stock. Is it a C300 or Scarlet? Nope. But are the C300's and Scarlets Mk3's? Nope. Lots of great work was shot on the Mk2 and continues. if anyone doubts that the Mk3 is not a better camera, their nuts or spoiled. Or just buy the BMD 2.5k. But as I see it, there are only 3 cameras to consider under $4000. The Mk3, the af100, and the BMDcine. Af100 still owns the most features under that price level.

I used to race motorcycles and we would tear perfectly good, brand new bikes apart, and rebuild them with a new carb, better after-market shocks, whatever could help win a race. Was the modified bike better? No, it was just better at a certain thing now (braking, acceleration, whatever). Some people just have this mindset, this way of looking at things; we just have to mess with stuff. Honestly, it's as much about us as it is about the finished product.

Let James and Andrew and the rest have their fun, and quit thinking it's taking something away from your unmodified camera (please).

Also, a little silly not to include the GH2 on the under 4k list, as it certainly can run with the AF100 any day. (edit, hacked GH2, that is)

I agree, image wise. IQ wise, gh2 is a pain in the butt. Plus a horrible rolling shutter. But image wise, it's why I have one sitting right next to my keyboard as I type this.

You forgot the horrible ergonomics which also make the GH2 pain in the butt.

I flew my lead actress over from Beijing last week for rehearsals and screen tests so I haven't had much time to check in...lurked a bit though. The BMD is priced right but is it any good in low light? I'm really enjoying the MKIII right now and the only thing more I could ask for is more dynamic range and RAW. The 1D C sounds cool but it's way overpriced.

Yes, it looks like the BCC is what you're asking for, apart the smaller sensor size factor and lowlight performance, very likely. I'd say it is native ISO320 as of now. It will become 1-1.5 stop faster when they will calibrate the sensor. It is their current goal at least. Nice to listen news from you.

Yes what on earth happened to this topic? I mean people get busy, yeah, but not a shred of info? When the hacked GH2 stuff was abound you couldn't stop Andrew from posting.

I'll put my money on the crazy notion that they broke their cameras and they are at MaxMax getting repaired because they lost their warranty. It's the ONLY reason we have not seen more footage and they don't want to look like fools posting, "hey look, we broke our new cameras".

Shoot with cinestyle or another flat PP and transcode with 5d2rgb and flatten it more.

Perhaps someone who is a member of his forum could directly ask Andrew over on EOSHD what the hell is going on? I am looking forward to having my scepticism vindicated.

I didn't have much time for camera tests, mostly shot promo stills and did rehearsals all week. The only video I shot was neutral dialled down but I'll do some cinestyle, flat, and marvels tests soon. 5000 ISO is cleaner than 1250 on the MKII and the resolution is great with a touch of post sharpening.

I still don't feel any need to do surgery on my MKIII.

When they saw the 4K DSLR footage on big screen or knew about BCC 12-bit RAW offer, they quit ;-)

Just kiddin' it is NAB week, I bet they are as much busy lurking as the best of us. The worst of us are naysaying as usual when something new is popping up and we've just spent our budget earlier : D

Why ask? It's obvious. It's been 3 weeks since James posted that footage. If it were some revelation that removing the OPLF were the advantage, they both would have more to show or post. They opened the camera and removed a design feature that canon scientifically placed there and threw off the balance of the sensor. Now they have to reopen the camera to try and make adjustments for focus and what not, test, fail, and reopen the camera, test, fail, reopen and ruin their camera.
The footage that Andrew put up of London before he played Operation on his camera looked nice. Then went into his camera and since has not posted ANY footage from the camera since. He broke it.
Someone posted that MaxMax had converted 2 cameras. Were is the footage from those 2 cameras?

So here it is, Andrew of EosHD (funny name being he rants about Sonys, and Gh2's), show us what the results are of your little experiment! You're costly experiment that is. What a nut...
Screw it, I'll go over there and ask what the result is. I'm not afraid of him.
