Canon 5d mark iii improved- olpf removed for higher resolution

FYI: Not bashing, just reporting:

Shane Hurlbut, ASC, not happy about 5DM3's OLPF:
http://twitter.com/#!/hurlbutvisuals/status/188677365226930178

It'll be interesting to see how Canon reacts to one of their star endorsers publicly criticizing the cam. Hopefully they address it directly by offering a version of the 5DM3 with a weaker OLPF, similar to what Nikon has done with the D800e.

Alternatively, the forthcoming Canon 4K DSLR potentially may be more to Shane's liking. Stay tuned.

I wonder if Shane has seen the 5DMIII test video's with one of its OLPF's removed. Someone should link page one of this thread to Shane. He might be curious about it.

The very limited tests that have been done don't prove removing the OLPF from the 5D3 makes any difference at all.

all i see is a lot of pronounced aliasing and a voided warranty of a 3500 camera. (and here i thought dslr filmmakers are practical)

A lot of pronounced aliasing...where?

What kind of herb have you guys been smoking?
I am pronouncedly worried!

well pronounced is a strong word, but i do see aliasing. not as bad as a mkII but its there. it looks good though. but not worth the effort

anyway ive moved on and await the upcoming announcements from canon, son & pany on NAB.
no DSLR for this guy :D

They fixed Hubble with a correction lens- I shot footage yesterday that appears sharper than normal straight out of camera. Normally I don't see any aliasing and moire, however this time I did see moire (on a distance church). It appears some OLPF's use polarizers (not clear if the 5D3 does). However there may be something happening when using a linear+circular polarizer (variable ND; circular polarizer is a linear polarizer with a 1/4 wave retarder (90 degree phase shifter)). I'll post footage of the church later today. If anyone has a 5D3 and a FaderND, Heliopan or similar, do you see any improvement in sharpness? A clear circular or linear polarizer might also be worth testing. Maybe we can improve sharpness by giving the camera glasses instead of LASIC ;-).

We have seen two very short transcoded/edited/compressed videos of random scenes & about four .MOV files straight off the camera. The video looks good but no better than other good 5D3 video. It's certainly not sensationally better. Most importantly there is no point of comparison between a 5D3 with & without the OLPF. So there is absolutely no evidence that removing the OLPF from the 5D3 makes any difference at all to the video image quality.

The evidence is here, already posted BTW. Aside the distinct exposures, they give a fair scope:

3hats- you might want to wait to see some detailed panning+camera-motion shots with the NO-OLPF mod. We asked for these tests and it sounds like Emmanuel passed them to James. No results yet- suggest waiting until they are posted.
Yes, re-tweeted. Then, it is only wait.

Those are completely different images. There is no fair scoping, of course the bricks come out more when the light is at a certain angle. And more contrast = more apparent sharpness. Funnily the amount of sharpening halos is pretty much the same. Take a look at the cars, they look pretty much the same (though hard to say as the shots are too different with different lighting and focus)

They are indeed very different... but in both perspectives too ;-) To my eyes, with a lot of differences despite the gap in time and exposure.

James just tweeted a couple of hours ago:

«I've been busy working. The OLPF thing took over my life. I'll get back to it as soon as possible. Cheers :) »

Can you post some examples of "sharpening halos". I'd like to think I'm a pretty capible pixel peeper and I don't get what is being refered to here :)

Cheers,
Pete

In my eyes 5d mkiii looks good. Really good. It may not resolve as much as people here want it to and it doesnt have to. i wont care if i use it because it does look good. And clean image is what matters. So pixel peepers go shoot something.

Andrew Reid four hours ago on twitter:

«Took the low pass filter out of my 5D Mark III and thrilled with look of footage now. Thanks for advice @millerandmiller»

I guess we'll have new footage soon :-)

Just saw that.

Another 5DMark III gets it's secondary OLPF removed. Andrew Reid at EOSHD takes the plunge!

I'm tuned in, again.

That's two reports that the OLPF change is significant. I'm gonna assume that Andrew didn't shoot something controllable before he removed it, though.

The prospect of decent resolved Full Frame being an OLPF removal away is beginning to sound pretty tempting.

That article just reinforces further what many of us have been saying since James Miller released his first findings... removing the OLPF offers little image improvement that can't be achieved via sharpening in post, and comes with the added cost of not only having aliasing and moire BACK in the image, but also voiding your warranty and risking significant damage to your camera's internal components. It also apparently requires additional adjustments such as an "IR block filter with certain light" and losing the camera's ability for self-cleaning. For the life of me, I can't understand why anyone would really be bothered enough to do this... much less get as excited about it as some of you guys are. Maybe I'm just not reading all of this right...
