Canon 5d mark iii improved- olpf removed for higher resolution

Softness doesn't bother me at all. Take a look on my old posts... The point is that there's no comparison between them, nothing else.

Yes, BTW James' clips also produce cinematic softness to pair a sharper outcome. When definition is welcome; this case. Resolution can be a good thing too :-D if/when comes up with the other elements that make the picture.

ready to pull the trigger. Spoke with the MaxMax fellow in NJ. Perhaps, next week. I'll let you know if it works out or I just get cold feet. Looks very promising to me. Anxious to see if Mr.Miller posts some additional tests.

You can ask them to remove both OLPFs (james only removed the outer one)

Marvin
Why did he only remove the outer one and why would I ask to have both removed? I there any evidence of removing both and how that performs? (not that there is much for just the single OLPF removal, either) MaxMax has yet to do a Mark3 mod, so their opinion would be based on other cameras.
This is all slightly crazy, but James Miller's results look very nice. Hard to ignore.

3hats- you might want to wait to see some detailed panning+camera-motion shots with the NO-OLPF mod. We asked for these tests and it sounds like Emmanuel passed them to James. No results yet- suggest waiting until they are posted.

Well actually I had a long talk with Dan, the president of Maxmax.com, he told me that for 5D2, they usually remove both OLPFs and replace them with a single piece of IR filter (thickness=two OLPFs), if they only remove the outer one and replace it with an optical glass or whatever, it may cause distortion because the new glass may not achieve 100% contact with the second OLPF.

The result of removing both OLPFs would be very interesting, since the camera is confirmed not doing any line-skipping, I think moire is not something to worry about.

However, you lose auto sensor cleaning. For focusing I believe maxmax will recalibrate for you.

Thanks, if nothing else MaxMax seem to be a knowledgeable organization. Would love to see a few more samples from Mr.Miller's camera.

That's awesome Bill. No cold feet. This is a "Revolution" my friend.... It will be a success, don't look back. Just study all that you can, before doing it. Take pictures galore of every step, and document your process for yourself and everyone else following this.. I'll definitely put your stuff on the opening of this thread along with Millers stuff, and anyone else who does this as well. The "Revolution" is here, and its ours...... :-D

Good information Marvin. I was wondering about Maxmax.com.

FYI: Not bashing, just reporting:

Shane Hurlbut, ASC, not happy about 5DM3's OLPF:

It'll be interesting to see how Canon reacts to one of their star endorsers publicly criticizing the cam. Hopefully they address it directly by offering a version of the 5DM3 with a weaker OLPF, similar to what Nikon has done with the D800e.

Alternatively, the forthcoming Canon 4K DSLR potentially may be more to Shane's liking. Stay tuned.
