GH2 Canon 5D Mark III 1080p is more like 720p compared to the GH2 !

Although the specification on the box says 1080p, with regards resolution the 5D Mark III is a huge let down and the $600 Panasonic GH2 offers a far more detailed 'true 1080p' image (whilst maintaining a relatively large sensor for video and interchangeable lens mount). The 1080p mode is not really full HD atall in terms of the real amount of detail in the image - more like 720p.

The 5D Mark III is vulnerable since it is not a huge step from the 5D Mark II in terms of the overall image in video mode. Other cameras such as the $5000 Sony FS100, $800 Panasonic GH2 and $3000 Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera offer significantly more in the ways of features and image quality for low budget video production.

Vulnerable to what? Not sell off the shelf? Not make money for Canon? Not be a great tool for video productions? Not measure up to everyone's expectations?

You'd have to ask the editors at dpreview. I suspect they meant all of the above.

For what it's worth, the video portion of the review was done by Andrew Reid from EOSHD. He doesn't exactly command a whole lot of respect here.

That does not diminish the truth about the 5DMKIII having lower resolution. We all see that this was a choice from Canon to protect their cinema line of cameras.

Bad news for us. Panasonic may follow the same path with the GH3. If the GH2 is already more sharp than the MkIII there is no need (or at least no hurry) to improve it in the next model.

I would say it is not bad news as why do you need to improve upon what is already top notch? Putting their energy into better encoding, color accuracy, HDMI output and color/look adjustments is what the camera really needs.

It already resolves about a 1000 lines of resolution. What more do you want?

If the 5DIII "is vulnerable since it is not a huge step up from the 5D Mark II," wouldn't the GH3 be just as vulnerable if it isn't a huge step up from the GH2?

If the GH3 incorporates what is in that list, then it is for sure a huge step up. Find a person who owns the GH2 that says the resolution needs to be improved... More like everything but the resolution!

Yes, you're right. There are other things more needed, but I want the full sensor image resized to exactly 1080p lines. :)

But as I already said, if Canon does not improve their MkII, means that they don't want to hurt their videocamera sales, so Panasonic might follow this path.

Why to improve video if it already has one of the bests (the best with price/value ratio?) video on a photo camera?

Remember that GH1 video was very muddy, and GH2 only has one mode for 24mb/sec! If I want to shot at 25fps I can't go above 17mb/sec!

Thanks to Vitaly, we can release the true potential of the camera, but the way Panasonic is working means that they may follow Canon's path, if they aren't already doing that...

1080 60p at 28mb/sec (AVCHD 2.0) for the GH3? That's not a big step forward. Even a hacked GH2 would be more interesting.

Let's wait and see...

EDIT: I have a GH1(3), and I'm very happy with its resolution :)

But Canon did improve the MK2, total paradigm shift, no, fairly significant upgrade, yes. Adding 720P 60 FPS and HD from the HDMI out alone are a fairly significant upgrade and that doesn't even account for the reduced moire and aliasing.

Panasonic Consumer and Broadcast are two completely different divisions. If anything, I'd be inclined to think that Broadcast relies more on Consumer for the M4/3 sensor tech, which was not developed under broadcast.

There are a lot of areas to improve on in the stills department, which the camera is primarily a tool for taking still pictures. It currently does not out perform similar m4/3 options that were just released.

I don't see anything that looks like the path that you're suggesting happening. If they were doing that they would've done it with the GH2 up front.

A new sensor with greater DR would boost the sales to people who still use the camera to shoot photos. That's what's most important, not 1080/60P.

You never know what will happen with this camera, everything is speculation until someone from the company says otherwise. For all we know, the camera could feature video professional ports or similar. XLR, HD-SDI. Can anyone tell me for a that it won't happen for a fact?

Anyone?

I thought it was more like 800-850?

It is slightly more than that but still just shy of 1000. There are only a couple of Panasonic camcorders that get more than the GH2. Resolution doesn't need to be increased anymore because most displays don't go any higher than about 1000 lines of true resolution.

What we need is more dynamic range. I would be all for a 9 megapixel GH2.
