Canon 5D II Lenses?

ok, so I bit the bullet and pre-ordered a 5D II with stock lens.

Does anyone have any recomendations for one or two additional lenses to compliment the stock lens?

Idealy, good in low light and shallow DOF. budget isn't too much of an issue (say, $1k-2k per lens)

Sorry for posting in the Nikon thread, but it seems to get more people here that may know about the better Canon lenses too.

I know the 24-105L already has the 24mm focal length but I'm not sure how good it is at 24mm. I am considering getting the new 24mm 1.4L II along with it. I think the 24-105 should be superb around the 50 and 85 mm mark, though it will only be f4 which might be good since the 5DII is auto exposure and you can limit how wide the camera can open up by using the 24-105 lens.

You might want to pick up the 50mm 1.4 for the shallow depth of field it will offer. I Don't think I would bother with the 50mm 1.2L. It's just not worth the extra money, IMO.

Of course the 85mm 1.2L II would be spectacular but maybe more than you want to spend.

Yes, except for the 24mm. I'm referring to the new 24mm 1.4L II. It should be out soon and should be better than the old one.

The pic of the 85mm doesn't do it justice. That lens is huge. It dominates the camera. It's definitely an attention grabber. The filter size is 72mm.

after seeing some still shots with the 85mm, I think I might be sold. Everything about it seems perfect.

There's also the 85mm 1.8 which is also an excellent lens for around $300. You don't need to go crazy with all "L" glass. L Glass is designed to control for chromatic aberration at very wide apertures like 1.2. A 1.8 85mm will give you great bokeh as well. At smaller apertures, the quality of "L" glass is of less importance.

thank you both... as you can probably tell... i'm no expert with dslr's... but the 5d and canon lenses look perfect for my main work (stock video, usually fixed tripod)

Cash isn't a major issue, but it might be worth me getting a few of the cheaper lenses untill I know what is right for my type of shots, then invest in the better glass when I am more confident.

Cheers, Jay
