Canon 5D - HDMI converted to SDI - No Monitor image when recording..?

Hello Canon users,

I have a 5D Mark 2 attached to a Marshall SDI monitor via a Blackmagic HDMI to SDI converter.
All this works fine. I have a great HD image on the monitor except when I press record and the image disappears..

If I disconnect the mini HDMI cable the image is on the back of the 5D, as it should be.

Any ideas why this is?

Many thanks for any nuggets of info.

Steve

simply the format of the video when recording is not HD, then the converter cannot eat that , since it is just a converter, not a scaler.

Hello,

Thanks for the reply.

Do you know if there is a 'scaler' out there that would allow me to use the HD / SDI monitor while recording on the 5D?

Thanks again,
Steve

Maybe cheaper and easier to get a good SD monitor...?
Or if you can change cams, the 7D or 1DIV output stays HD...

I would recommend using the AV cable that came with your camera. Most monitors will have a SD composite input. That's your best solution. It's SD but it's always on.

I've also heard of people using both the HDMI and the AV cable. That way you can see SD while recording and HD before/after recording. I don't have an HDMI monitor (yet), but the SD signal isn't too bad. (still useful for focusing)

There sure is a connection box which can keep the signal flowing (with a 4-5 second backout, though) and converts from HDMI to HD-SDI. We had one rented about 2 weeks ago, the rental company had it just updated the night before. Pardon me for not writing down the name of the unit, keep looking...

What we noticed was that the camera does go to record immediately, but there is a blackout in the monitor connection which slows the takes a bit.
