Canon 5D- Frame rate info and other advice needed

Hi I would like some info provided in laymens terms about the frame rate issues i hear a lot about at the moment and some other info i need.

So hear its 30p as opposed to 24p. What really is the difference between the two, in reality. Does the 24p upgrade mean that it can be blown up to 35mm without any real problem.

When is the upgrade coming?

If i wanted to shoot slow-motion with the 5D, is that possible?

Can the shutter angle be adjusted to shoot similar footage to films like 28 Days Later and Saving Private Ryan?

As there is 12 minute limit, can you not record longer lengths on a memory card like a 16gb for instance? I'm a bit confused about this.

If an operator is using the camera, can i have a separate monitor to watch the footage. I think i've heard that using a monitor cuts out the LCD on the camera itself. Would a wireless monitor still do this?

Welcome to the site. FYI, you can find answers to all your questions easily by using the search engine in DVXUser. Try using it next time as it helps reduce redundant posts.

I've numbered your questions for reference:

1. 24p is what film is shot with. It is an aesthetic choice that filmmakers prefer. 30p looks more like video.

2. The firmware update was released this past week to allow 24p on the 5D MkII. Search on the 5D page to find links.

3. You can't shoot any faster than 30p. If you want 720p 60fps time ramping, than look at a 7D, 1D MkIV, or t2i. Otherwise you can use an NLE or compositor to slow down your footage with some degradation to quality.

4. Yes, you can shoot at higher shutter speeds than 180 degrees.

5. Yes you can keep hitting record till the card is filled up. Canon DSLR's use a FAT32 file structure which is limited at a max of 4GB per file. And the 4GB is equivalent to 12 minutes.

6. If you use the HDMI or composite out of the DSLR, it cuts your onboard monitor. You would need an HDMI splitter to run multiple monitors. Or you can use a laptop with Canon EOS Utility to run as a monitor while still using your onboard LCD screen. See more info here: http://www.youtube.com/nextwaveg#p/a/59E53D852E8EFF10/1/oVAc4VWHigo
