Canon 4K C200 and C400 at NAB?

The number I've heard for the C series is 12 stops, which is pretty darn good. Even though Canon may not release something, I wouldn't continue to think of them as a non player...many said they wouldn't compete in the cinema market at all before releasing the C cams from basically out of nowhere.

The majority of the rumors have been hardware/firmware upgrades to current cameras rather then releasing new ones if I remember correctly.

The C cameras have by far one of the best sensors out there. Specs do not tell the whole story. There is a reason Shane Hurlbut picked the C500 in a blind test against the F65, Alexa, RED, etc. Shadow definition and color information is excellent with high ISO's. Being that the same sensor is in the C100 (even though limited by it's output capacities) I think it is an excellent alternative to 5D raw. I would rate the C100 at 12 stops as well. By the way the RED Epic has about that level of dynamic range as well (around 12.5 stops in my opinion) while performing very poorly by comparison in low light, it really is the resolution and higher frame rates that sell that camera. The Scarlet is in trouble I think though.

Personally, I don't think there will be a C200 or C400. Canon traditionally have 3.5 year product cycles. I think they will sit with their current line and upgrade for a while.

I think they're going to announce a 5D+ that adds the video features (peaking, zebras, audio meters) that the competitive DSLR hybrids are delivering for well under $2k (GH4, RX10).
It will have a better codec...even the C sensor.
Finally adding real video features to the FF DSLR and making it a next level 1080p DSLR doesn't seem far fetched if your competition is putting out 4k cameras for way less than your 1080 cameras.
It would be the best FF 1080 camera in the market and still fit, feature/cost wise, under the C100.
That's what I bet.

I don't have a horse in this race ... yet. One thing that's great about the C cameras at all levels is that they make beautiful images. You can just show producers and clients the footage and they like it. It is warm and rich. People who have these cameras like them a lot. The C300 is the next camera talked about when choosing cameras after Epic and the new Sonys. There's always things to want but on IQ these cameras provide a lot of value.

Whatever Canon has to do to keep this going - whether upgrades for current owners or new models that keep the momentum going - they should, IMO. Don't abandon loyal customers. Sometimes I think that Panasonic has done that and it's going to cost them. The DSLR shooters are getting good upgrades this year it seems

(Important to note this is a rumour and may just be speculation on behalf of my source).
... I’ve blurred out areas of this screen grab to protect the identify of the source, although it was a public tweet shared openly. Let’s hope he is right!

If this was dialogue in a really, really bad movie, nobody would buy it!
"May be speculation on behalf of my source." WTF??? Did you, like, you know... ask him if this is true information (ie reality) as opposed to speculation? :undecided

And blurring twitter users' names? millions of people can read it, but you're going to "protect" your source??? Wha???

You can't make this sh!t up, unless you, well... make it up... :embarasse

rant over. I now resume my previous life in progress...

"I think canon will instead update the firmware of the C100 charge and C300 to meet the expectations of people by providing the 10-bit P 422 in 1080 and can be 4K external recording. The sensor of its cameras can support without problem this update.

The DIGIC DV III processor is the weakest link in the Cinema EOS cameras. Higher frame rates just are not possible without replacing it. Now if Canon is willing to do processor upgrades that would be very interesting but highly doubtful.

This would be fine but I don't know if the DIGIC DV III processor can output 10bit.

One has to think though. Canon spent tons of money making Canon centers to support the C-line. As we've already seen, there has been hardware upgrades with the dual pixel tech in the cameras. Maybe Canon has the plan to offer other hardware upgrades such as processors and sensors to the existing cameras? This way, the upgrade doesn't really affect the existing product and they can make the profit from less manufacturing of materials.

I would love to see something like this. Take your C300 in and get a new processor and walk out with 4K 10bit 422. Take the C100 in and walk out with 4K 8bit 420 with 422 out of the HDMI. I just have a strange feeling that this is whats going to happen.

Yes, but C500 has HD-SDI out in 8bit only (like C300), only 3G-SDI output 10bit or 12bit. I don't know why C500's HD-SDI can't also output 10bit? So yes, Digic DV III can output 10bit, but we don't know in which form, it needs another HW for 10bit out in HD-SDI?

Actually, the C500 has two HD-SDI monitor ports just above the dual 3G-SDI ports that output 10-bit YCC in either HD or 2K resolutions. These are in addition to the 8-bit HD-SDI port located in the same spot that the C300 has it's HD-SDI.

From the C500 manual:

Yes, but if I know these ports are only for monitor purpose, in specification is "monitor video out" - no "HD SDI out for monitor" (these ports are output from another HW for 3G-SDI)? I don't understand this canon logic (HD-SDI out only in 8bit) so I have some misgiving about Digic DV III ability output 10bit direct to HD-SDI out. I like good surprise but...

edit: If you turn off 3G-SDI in C500 camera menu has these monitor ports live signal? I think that no, only HD-SDI output the 8bit signal in this case.

I myself would love this to happen, but I think it is wishful thinking. It would take money away from future sales of new Canon Cinema cameras. This is a throw away culture and even Red has had difficulty down this path. Again, I would love this since I own a C100 and rent C300 cameras. I doubt the Canon Centers have enough man power to make this happen though. I hope Canon will take a new world approach, but it is very grounded in the old world.

I don't know why Canon does the things it does, but outputting is outputting. If the C500 is spitting out a 10-bit uncompressed signal from HD-SDI ports with a Digic DV III, then the processor is not the limiting factor.
