Canon 1DX is the "SAME" camera as the 1DC except FIRMWARE...

Makes me wonder if we will ever see a hack, maybe a modification of the 1DC firmware letting people put it onto the 1DX.

Interesting.

Phillip Bloom did a very low key shoot on a 1DX that he posted on August 14, and it looked great. Basically just hand held, plus a tripod and minimal slider. No lighting, no rig, no follow focus, no crew really.

Sounds like there is a lot of potetial in that camera! It would be nice if we could up the bit rate, get Canon Log Gamma or similar, and get clean HDMI out.

Not the whole 4K bushell, just a few higher bandwidth data capabilities. I guess that makes sense if you look at the power of the newer cameras vs. the 5D2.

Good news for the future too, when the Yen returns to a normal range!

So, a $6K firmware update? Canon earned the sympathy of lots of video shooters over the last 4 years. They seem to be on a crusade to piss them all off before 2012 is over. (And yes, I know manufacturing costs don't dictate prices and they can charge as much as they want if people still buy the thing; that won't avoid many people feeling cheated or abandoned)

That is no different than the Scarlet being the same as the Epic except with a stripped firmware. RED claims that they are "binning" chips but that is unlikely. There are probably boatloads of Scarlets that could just as well work as Epics. But somehow Canon is EVIL.

Research and development costs would be a factor too, though, because that 4K software didn't just materialize out of nowhere. Those software boffins at Canon have to eat too.

Scarlet happens to be much lighter in weight so I don't think it's the same hardware.

I rather had the 1Dc was cheaper but Canon is allowed to deside themselfves how much they ask for the one or the other. I still want to buy this camera for sure.
I do think Canon is challenging hackers. Wonder how this will end :)

So far the hackers have been doing very well. Magic lantern is finally coming to the 7D, it took a while, but they just finally cracked it. And these are guy who aren't getting paid a salary. It might be time to start a kick starter to buy a couple 1DX for the hackers to work on.

I'll need much more than that man's word for it before I believe this. He is not a trustworthy nor knowledgeable source in my eyes - he has a history of posting nearly ANYTHING to get hits for his blog.

I don't buy it.

I am super excited about the Canon 1D C and have even told Canon that I want the first piece sold in my country. The supposed to be high price of 13k hurts a bit. However, I am visualising the ability to create magic.

This camera has no peers. Such a small package and 4K. More importantly, the ability to shoot slow motion at 1080p at 60fps is very important. Especially scenes when I am filming wildlife from a motor boat.

Also, this camera gives a fantastic ability to either shoot Full HD using the entire full frame sensor or a 1.6 crop factor S35 sized portion of the sensor. No other camera gives me such ability.

As far as cost is concerned, customer feedback can help in forcing a manufacturer to keep a smaller profit margin. However, that feedback has to be offered to the manufacturer in a suitable manner.

The difference in marketing and perception of Epic/Scarlet and 1DX/1D C is interesting.

EPIC was already launched and was an existing product. So when Scarlet was announced, RED smartly said that it is basically an EPIC as they are using the chips and circuits which are not capable of the high quality requirements of the EPIC. (For exact words check the RED forum). So immediately the Scarlet was raised in the perception of people that they are getting a great product at a lower price. I would say very smart marketing.

In case of Canon, the 1D X was announced first. So when the 1D C was announced people took it as Canon fleecing them by offering a 1D X plus some extra codec. So clearly Canon hasn't managed the perception as RED did. Of course, Canon is a listed company and it can't just say that they are using an "inferior" chip in 1DX compared to 1D C etc etc or some stuff. They can only give facts that can withstand shareholder and regulator scrutiny.

It would be interesting to see how Canon handles this perception. Or whether it wants to handle it, as most of the people who are vocal here are not going to buy this camera.

Epic is just as small and is 5k. And has much higher framerates than 60.

Nikons (D4 and D800) do this with fullframe sensors, and the Canon T3i does it with an APS-C sensor. And Reds have been capable of this for years.

I'm pretty sure that REDs are unable to shoot Full Frame (the sensor is too small)?

While there is no doubt that Reds are superior in many ways as you mentioned; there would be other tradeoffs in favor of the Canon. Namely it is very discrete (for public filming), low cost of media (and small), low cost batteries (and small), long life batteries, and Canons are generally pretty reliable, don't have a noisy fan like the Epic etc. For some shoots the ability to just grab a DSLR, a lens, a pocket of batteries and a handful of small media cards and shoot in 4K would be quite tempting.

I never said they did.

I was speaking to specific points of the previous poster - namely those I quoted. Mine was not intended as a thorough smackdown of the Canon, merely pointing out some inaccuracies as posted. I would be the last person in the world to imply a Red is automatically superior to anything based on specs - I have shot Reds of various flavors for hundreds of days, and hate nearly everything about them (except the image they produce) with a passion.

Your defense of Canon vs. Red is unnecessary.

The RED is actually much larger and heavier than a 1D-C or 1D X, having owned the Scarlet-X (just sold a week ago) and played with the 1D-C back at NAB 2012, the weight and size difference is very much noticable.
And of course the RED will require V-mount batteries and adapters (which will increase the weight even more) if you wanted to run it for longer hours than just the 25-30mins on REDVolts alone...
But I really liked the footage that was coming off of that MX sensor tho ;D
I just wished the battery life was better, if there was a possibility to run the Scarlet or Epic for at least an hour or so on a single REDVolt then that'd be great :)

I am not sure either. I think he may have taken a general statement - that they are basically the same camera - and run too far, too fast without confirming whether there are other differences.

He has been pretty off the hook in the comments there lately.

So what's your next camera move now?
