Canon 1D C review, and a lot of footages

Thank you.

At 4k, I can deal with no sharpening. Haha. Part of the reason I have never liked HD is the false sharpening that so often takes place. It pops, but at a cost, imho.

Yep, you got something there. Sharpness, and detail is two different things. Even though I haven't used all the best lenses on the 1D C - though the tests were made with the best ones I could get - it contained detail every time.
Even on a 50" plasma...

Delivery is and will always be the 2nd half ;-) Congrats for your adoption and Kudos to China (I have a good friend in Beijing if you need anything, let me know), I think to have one for Moscow and Kiev in order to complete a feature started to be shot on a 5D Mark II (E :-)

That would be great! I will be up in Beijing and Shanghai at some point.
I'll pm you.

Thanks

Wow, you're fast:) I'm glad someone has the budget for these "toys":) I'm also interested in if the 1D C will be usable on a real production or not. Will see:)

Played around with the 1D-C yesterday. First impressions are really good. It is the first digital video camera that I have owned which I feel I may keep for as long as it serves me. Difficult to feel like any digital camera is a classic, but this is as close as they've come.

My only suggested change for now is to add a flip out LCD, but losing the convenience of a flip out is offset by: bullet proof! (rain proof + never going to leave the monitor flipped out and snap it off. ) But having a 60D flip out survive for 2years through rain, and drops from sometimes 3feet or 4feet, and dust, there is less fear. Still, this is the most robust digital camera I have ever held (not heavy, robust, as in can beat it up and not worry).

Image is very good. Low light is very good.

I think I love the APS-H frame size. My shooting differs from some, but I think I like it better than full frame and better than s35. I'll know by the end of the year for sure. The 35mm and 50mm have a great look, but were never wide enough for me in s35/aps-c. ff35 is almost too wide.

The 1D-C is expensive to own for personal use, but checks off almost everything on my wish list. If you are prone to gear lust purchases, this is a great quick fix (14fps mirror shutter sound amazingly satisfying), but you will surely be looking at other things by the end of the year. If you like tools, this could last you a very long time (A-cam for now, crash cam tomorrow).

Huski, thanks for an amazing review of the 1DC and for sharing with us the source footage for color grade tests.

Quick question for you or for James0b57: do either of you plan to use the 1DC for green screen work? As the 1DC's 4K Motion Jpeg is 530 Mbps, I'm dying to see how well it handles green screen. I keep trying to rent it from Rule Boston Camera but it's always out for rentals, good sign.

Thanks again for that great review and all the visual examples.

Yes, I will do some green screen, but not for a couple weeks.

Always out for rent? That is nice.

Happened to have some 4k 1D-C footage on a drive, when I visited the mac store today. Tried playing the footage on the Retina 2.4 i7 MBP, and the iMac. Play back was choppy. Looked quite amazing in clarity.

The playback choppiness wasn't a surprise, but figured I would confirm it. (The retina display and 4k content is pretty awesome though. And the 4k footy on the iMac still looked incredibly detailed. )

James,

How long does the battery last...

I do not have exact times yet. Seems better than the 5dmk2 or 60D. With fairly frequent shooting, I got half way through the battery in 5hrs. Wasn't straight through, but very frequent towards the last two hours. Gives me the impression that I want to have 3 or 4 batteries (as any production camera should), but most people will be fine with 2, as I imagine you will only use two a day with most production scenarios.

Some run and gun shots in HK with 1DC:

New HD version. Best quality download.

s35 1080/25p IPB and ff35 1080/25p IPB - iso ranging from 400 to 1600.

(May still be encoding on vimeo, but the download is there.)
