Canon 16-35mm - to matte box or not to matte box?

I'm considering getting a matte box for the 16-35mm, mostly because I'm worried that circular NDs will vignette the lens.
I'll be getting a UV 4mm thick to keep on the lens... the NDs would be 5mm.
4mm + 5mm, would 9mm cause vignetting on the 16-35mm?

In short I'd rather not have to spend $$ on a matte box since I'm doing fine without one.

Just get some larger ND filters and some step up rings. Shouldn't cause vignetting. The 77mm thread (correct?) on that lens is already quite large so you might have a hard time finding a larger ND filter....what camera are you using? If you're using a 7D or T2i the crop factor should protect your edges anyway.

It's the 82mm actually so it's pretty big. I'll be using it with the 5d thus the problem :(

Tata Steva confirmed here that the Genus Wide matte box causes slight vignetting at the 16mm end with a thin filter on the lens.

I'd like to ask 2 questions on this thread:

1. What's the maximum overall thickness of filters that will not vignette the 16mm? (as of now I'm getting a Hoya HD UV which is 4mm thick and considering the B+W slims for NDs which are 3mm thick)

2. Which matte box does not allows no vignetting at the 16mm end?
