Cannot monitor individual channels with Tascam Dr-70d?

Hello,

I was considering investing in a Tascam DR-70D -- after heavily using and enjoying the Tascam DR-60D.

However, it would appear that on the Tascam DR-70D, you cannot monitor individual audio channels. When looking at pictures of the Tascam Dr-70D, there does not appear to be a monitor select button on the unit.

Have they removed the ability to monitor individual channels?
Or is it done differently now? For example, do you have to go through a menu?

I was planning on using the Tascam-70D to record 2 lav mics and 1 boom. Was wanting to be able to monitor each channel separately.
Saw a B&H review that said this was no longer possible which halted my decision to purchase until I found out more.

Any advice?

- I do not have any 'hands-on' experience with the 70, but from perusing the manual, it doesn't appear to have the 'software mixer', 'input solo' or individual track outputs that some of the DR series recorders have.

I have both recorders. You are correct, there is no dedicated monitor button, and you can not monitor each channel individually. On the 70D go to menu>monitor> choose MIX or CAM. The work around would be choose MIX and use the gain knobs to isolate each channel.

Hope this helps.

This is what I have done.

It works. It's disappointing...but it works.

But since i have single-handedly run up bar tabs that were more than what I paid for my DR70D I figure it's fair.
I can always move up and spend more money...

The Tascam DR-680 mk2 is the next level up correct?

Does Zoom have anything that can take 4 XLRs and is in a ballpark similar price range to the 70D?

There's also no dedicated phantom power button on the 70D the way there is on the 60D - on the 70D you have to do it through the menu system. I have both, and I find the 70D UI a step back compared to the 60D. Overall I do like the 70D, even though it certainly has its limitations, but like DPStewart said, it's hard to beat the price.

The original DR-680 had better preamps than any of the Zooms and the other DR series Tascams. The MkII preamps allegedly have better preamp components than the org. Both 680's have selectable track(s) solo, a (level/pan) software mixer (monitor and send to tracks 7-8, analog track outputs (RCA) and S/PDIF in/out. It's not really designed for a OMB/DSRL shooter though.
