FS7: Cannot format Lexar 2933x

Hi,

just got 2 of the Lexar 2933x 128gb cards and updated my FS7 to FW 3.1

I noticed that one of the cards could not be formated in memory slot A but the other could. Then I tried the slot B and it worked. I then tried to record in 4K 50P and filled both cards, but the card that was problematic earlier did not have any files on it when I tried to offload it, even though the camera reported no problem during recording.

This makes me a bit nervous about these cards.. Anyone else had anything like this happen? I will try to replicate and send the faulty card back, but need to be sure the other cards wont go bad.

I ordered 3 of these 2 are working fine. One had similar issues to yours it would not format at first. Once formatted I filled it with 50p 4k footage. On playback got playback halted warning. The footage did record ok and I managed to tranfer the test files ok to my pc. Re inserting the card causes my fs7 to lock up and requires pulling off the battery to reset the camera.

These cards are hit and miss QC wise make sure you test thoroughly beforehand. I'm sending the faulty one back.

Heres a video demonstrating the problem.

Thank you, yes that seems like a similar experience.
Im trying the other card now, filling it up material and offloading, seems to work as expected.

Do you feel you can trust your other 2 cards?

I'm going to test them over and over for the next 3-4 days filling them, offloading and checking playback in camera and on the edit suite. I'll only put them on a real live job after extensively testing them.

Now my other card got playback halted.. I thinks its worth it with the premium price for the Sony cards if there is gonna be like every other card of the lexars that does not work

Definitely sounds like these 2933x cards have a pretty serious QC issue. For the record though, just wanted to say that I've been shooting with 4x 64GB 1444x Lexars for 14 months now (17,448 clips shot), and never had so much as a whimper from the camera, so it's not necessarily the brand, as much as the model, if you catch my drift.

Sorrry to hear about the frustration/disappointment on these ones though,

jason

P.S. Out of interest, is there any benefit to the 2933x over the 1444x, other than faster download times?

Funny you should mention this as (I said in a recent thread), I had 2 1444x 64gb fail on me last weekend when trying to record 100fps. They seemed to record fine but I received an error on playback and subsequently lost a couple of the recordings. I put the Sony cards in and they worked flawlessly.

On the FS7 Facebook page, people are always reporting problems with the Lexars. Probably best to just pony up the cash and get the Sony cards, which are rock solid. Just not worth a failure on a real job where your reputation will be badly damaged.

Exactly. It's no secret that my stance is to ONLY use cards certified/approved by the equipment manufacturer. When a client is paying you a few grand a day, are they going to be OK with losing footage(or the entire shoot) because you decided to try to save a few dollars on media? I just looked on B&H and the Lexar cards are ONLY $10/card less than the Sony's for comparable cards. My reputation, not to mention peace-of-mind is worth A LOT MORE THAN THAT. Even if the third party media was fully certified, I'm not sure I'd even bother for only $10/card price difference.

In UK they are $150 more. On B&H Lexar are $160 and Sony $180 for the 350mbps G series. That make it a TOTAL no brainer!

I ordered 3x 128 Lexar cards unfortunately one was faulty and had formatting and playback issues from the onset. That card was returned to the vendor. The other 2 cards have been fine though. I did a lot of tests on the remaining 2 cards, trying all different frame rate, frame sizes and recording formats. Including transferring the recorded data to my editing machine and checking for any corruption of the recorded footage. My conclusion is that there are quality control issues with some of the Lexar 128 cards.

I haven't seen prices in the UK drop for the Sony 128 cards yet. If I order from B&H postage and import duties takes the price upwards :(

I'd go with the Sony cards if and when they are made available in the UK at a lower price point.

If anyone else is considering the Lexar cards I'd advise testing them thoroughly before using them on a paid gig.

It would be nice to hear from other user who have tried the 128 Lexars with the FS7?

Surinder.

Dont you get a refund on VAT in the UK?

Norwegian VAT works like that i can deduct my spent VAT from my incoming VAT on sold services. Like a single day of filmphotographer fee will reimburse all my VAT costs for 4x Sony G-series cards.
