Canadian Pricing

I just spoke with a gentleman in Toronto who will be distributing the new camera and it looks like the prices are going to be roughly $7800 for the camera and 1300 for the camera and p2 cards. If any other Canucks have some prices, respond. It also appears that the first round of cameras will be sold in December like our southern neighbours. Only for people on the waiting list though. The second batch arrives in January.

Just a side note-Panasonic Canada needs some better customer service. Their suck knob is cranked up to 11 eh.

Why don't other countries have more people like Jan? i dont' understand why the u.s. gets taken cared of so well - what is Panasonic japan like ? What kinda problems are you experiencing Angrius?

I have been following this forum and HVX200 for ages i expected to see one in IOV (Institute of Videography in Coventry Exhibition - UK) in April this year and all i saw was an A1 Poster of the camera  its been over 6 months and still i hear nothing from any main professional camera dealers in UK about HVX200 i.e Optex, Creative Video, H Preston among others. I hear nothing about the price or availability? it sucks to be waiting for a camera you dont know the price of, you dont know the release date and you dont know all the features (PAL MODEL)... This forum is a great place but we need some info about the Pal Model, the release dates, the prices... etc....
Come on Panasonic UK please give us some info.
All this only make me wish i was in L.A :engel017:

Raza Malik, you have all the reason(s)! At least (also) for me! Let's go Panasonic, it has been time!...more than a reasonable time...

Panasonic Canada is the worst ever...

I drove 7 hours to New York to pick up my DVX.. ended up saving $1500+ with the rebate, deal and lower price

What store did you ask in Toronto Angrius? Henry's?

It doesn't make any sense at all. If the camera is $6000 US, that means at today's exchange rate, it should be $7151.50 CDN.

The Canadian dollar is currently $0.85 US. If they're listing it at $7999 in Canada, that would be if the Canadian dollar was at $0.75 US.

There's a HUGE difference. Once you add in taxes, in Ontario that camera would cost $9200. So you'd save over 2 grand driving over to the states to buy it.

If you look over at the Apple store, their prices take into account about an $0.80 CDN dollar. Which sucks, but not quite as much.

And then consider that the dollar was recently as high as $0.89, it really is a huge rip off.

Hey guys..sorry for getting back to you late on your questions..I spoke to a guy from Absolute Electronics (i'm almost certain that was the name of the place..i'll double check today at lunch..it's what panasonic sent me too in toronto..so if you call them that's their main distributer).

The problem I had with Panasonic when I called was that they had no idea what the product really was. P2 Cards..what? what's that? That's ridiculous. They didn't know a price, didn't have a release date..nothing. The distributer was the one who had the answers..not Panasonic Customer Service. I would be embarrassed if this was my company division.

Haven't checked out Henrys yet. They seem to jack up their price a lot..just like Vistek (who doesn't mention the camera on their site yet) I think I might go to the states to get this camera..maybe New York.

Drivequickly the price difference doesn't make any sense. I think it's some kind of "supply and demand scam here in Canada". Sure we don't have the population but that doesn't justify jacking the price up that high. It seems that right now it's better just to go down to the US and buy what you need..I'm looking at getting a Toyota 4Runner next year...a 1999. I could buy that here for say 14000 or go get one in the US for 6500, pay the exchange and service at the border and still come out ahead. PAUL MARTIN SUCKS.

That's all for now. Talk to you guys later.

What can we expect in duties/import fees on this category of electronics? Anyone had a DVX shipped over the border, maybe have an idea?

It's too bad Pana isn't basing their MSRP correctly here... 7900CDN is only going to force every budget-conscious buyer(everyone) from their local rep(like DVshop) over to the US retailers who ship "internationally", such as B&H.

So much for free trade...

I don't know exactly, but duties on electronic stuff like dslrs aren't a lot, because of the free trade thing.

I've already placed an order for an HvX with Rush at EVS.

The name of the company is called Applied Electronics..if anybody is in the Toronto area their contact number is 905.625.4321.

Just an added note..if you have friends in the US that you trust, you can send them the money to buy the camera then have them ship it to you and mark down that it's a gift. Usually you don't get dinged at the border at all. Good luck\

Keep in mind that that is Pansonics price..not the companys..they weren't sure what they were going to price it at yet..won't really know until the end of November..maybe they'll put it a lot lower..say 7200 or something.

There are no duties on electronic equipment, only GST+PST (or HST if you are in Maritimes).

Not sure if PAUL MARTIN sucks (I am pretty sure about JEAN CHRETIEN, though). And I am not about to start another political rant, either... :lipsrseal ...but Canadian prices do suck. If you have stuff shipped from EVS, you save a bundle even if you pay for extra insurance (because it's transborder). Usually the shipping company clears the customs for you for about 30 bucks.

The camera will have a street price that should be under $7100.00 Canadian (HVX200 only) and under $12,000.00 with 2 P2 cards. There is a 2 x 4G bundle but I don't recall the pricing.
Canadian dealers that have pre-ordered have been told that pricing is not final, but certainly won't be more than the pre-order price. In other words , by the time the camera ships there could be changes which may benefit the end user. But who knows...we already have a great product coming for a fraction of the price of the competition (don't forget).
I suppose I can't say any more as my employer is not an official sponsor of this site (?)
Anyways I spend alot of my free time in these forums so thought I'd give you all as much information as I could.
BTW DVX100Bs are arriving here this week.
FWIW I hope that helps,

i would advice against buying from vistek or henry's since they seem to jack up
their prices. better to go down to NY.

The only disadvantage of going to the states for equipment is the warranty. Canadian dealers won't honor US warranties. And I don't see myself shipping it back to the states for repair.

The main thing stopping me from ordering from the US are the duties. The warranty would be a pain in the butt as well.

Why don't we have a Jan? Panasonic Canada is the worst. Their website is useless, their reps are clueless and their promotions are non-existent.

For a new DVX, I got quoted a price of around $4500.00 CAN barebones. No rebate. No DVX Book. No extra battery. Nothin.

With that said, we'll be paying at least $3000 CAN more for an HVX than a DVX which is an obscene amount of disparity between our price and the US price.

I wonder which side of the border Jarred buys his equipment from and why? :undecided

Xcheck says there are no duties... and I think he's right. Or very little... not enough to deter me from purchasing from the States.

I bought a used $30.00 lens from Ebay US. UPS claimed that there was a duty of$2.80 which they paid on my behalf... and demanded $40.00 as brokerage fee. I told them to go to hell.

I am so sure the Free Trade Agreement has done away with duties on electronic stuff like video cameras... I'd be more concerned with delivery companies trying to scam you with "brokerage fees".

If you really want to buy in Canada, then do mail order from another province. I bought a video camera from Toronto through the mail (I live in BC) and didn't have to pay provincial tax... which came to a couple of hun.

I've asked Jarred where to buy... he recommends EVS, and I'm on a waiting list for an HVX.

we need to get our mahowny straight & figure out what's the best route- pay the premium MSRP in canada or import/ smuggle it in.

According to the gov website, electronics are NOT duty free.

http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/import/courier/postal/ind_duty_free-e.html
http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/import/courier/postal/ind_reassess-e.html

Note with typical fed flare, they've conveniently left out what percentage? flat fee? is paid.
So does anyone have legit experience importing a similar electronic device into Canada from the US know what to expect duty-wise?

I think if the item originated outside the US then there would be duty. i.e. If something came from Japan, then to the US, then to Canada, there would be duty. NAFTA covers stuff manufactured in the signing countries.

But not 100% sure. I don't think you ever can be when dealing with Customs.

Cheers,
Chris
