Canadian DVX Users...

I live on Vancouver Island in BC, Canada.

I'm in the market for a new DVX100A and was wondering where I could order it from for the best price.

I know a places like EVS online http://www.evsonline.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=AGDVX100A

have a good reputation, but am I better served going through a Canadian dealer?

I've checked out Vistek
http://www.vistek.ca/details/detail_over.asp?eCode=214157&TYPE=&Specs=N&Box=N

Is it a good choice?

I'm concerned about taxes and custom duties (if it comes from the states) and the exchange rate.

What would the Canadian DVX community suggest?

Thanks for any and all comments!

This looks like a great forum!

Re: Canadian DVX Users...

I live in alberta and buy all my stuff from BH out of new york, check out your conversions at http://finance.yahoo.com/currency?u , when I did it I bought a ton of gear, plus the canadian dollars up more than when I bought my stuff and I know that I saved hundreds by purchasing from BH.get your stuff shipped UPS Expedited, not only is it cheaper than the other choices but every time I've bought from BH its come within 6 day's, once I ordered on monday afternoon and it camer friday. I did check out vistek, and also had sit downs with local dealers - even then the best deal will be found by either evs or Bhphoto.com I don't even know what brokerage fees' people keep talking about. I can't look it up right now but will check my invoices tonight.

P.S. where on the island you live, I lived in Victoria for 3 years.

Re: Canadian DVX Users...

I lived in Victoria for a number of years (I went to UVic there), but now I live north of Nanaimo in Qualicum Beach.

Thanks for the comments, any other info (eg. brokerage fees) you could provide would be most welcome.

Thanks,

-Jeff

Re: Canadian DVX Users...

Welcome to DVXUsers,

Vistek is a good store but they are not always coming with the best price. I know VGA Communication in Montreal have very good price. You have to ask for a quotation. www.vga.qc.ca ask Pierre Laverdure

EVS is very close from where you are in the WestCoast however, it's in California.

If you need an extra battery, go for the one on this site, best value for your money. Jarred Land, the creator of DVXUsers sell them from this site, just clik the link.

Good Luck !

Re: Canadian DVX Users...

Vistek guys are good but the gang is right, better price getting it from the states. Get a quote from Rush at EVS and see if Vistek will match - If not (I assume they won't) then get it from Rush. You get Barry Greens book for free as well from the US

Hi Jeff, I ship cameras to Canada all the time. Ours usually get to Canada within 48hrs. using Fedex International Priority. Our new batch of cameras that we ordered will have Barry's book in the box. :)

Re: Canadian DVX Users...

Hey Jeff, Just checked out my reciepts and it's like I thought. I must be the only sane person ordering to Canada. My UPS reciepts say - import charges around $400 and it's linked straight down the page to GST, did the math and that's all I was charged - no brokarage fee's! just taxed by the gov'n. which you'd get if you bought in canada anyway's. Out of $4400US I only paid $130 to get everything shipped. that included my dvx-20 tapes-light kit with 6pnd battery- 2 mics-full size tripod and xlr' cables. Call EVS, been in the office a couple times, it's the first place I ever touched a DVX, they let me come in toss in a tape so I could really check out the captured image. You'll be happy buying from them.

Re: Canadian DVX Users...

dvshop.ca in Toronto, knowlegable, competitive.

Scott @ Cinequip on Toronto, division of William F. Whites, seem to do volume and have top end accessories

Steer Clear of Vistek.

Re: Canadian DVX Users...

dvshop is amazing... not sure about shipping, but I went there quite a bit in Toronto

but I think evsonline is cheaper overall... even with taxes+shipping

I don't think there are any freebies like Barry's book and Magic bullet in Canada either :(
