Canada Drug Doc Person....

Why don't you go to private schools and ask. If you've cut something for them to see, and it looks good, they would love to have their name plastered all over a film like that because it makes them look more active even if they just write a check. Private schools have egos they like to keep up.

Getting money from public school system will fail because thats not what they want to spend there money towards, on top of the fact that most are broke too. They want drug awareness education that directly effects the students.

The only public schools you could get money from are thoses is wealthier areas, but then how can they even relate your documentary to any part of there own lives. Those people live in Los Angeles, and in the ghetto.

I forget the name of group for doc films you can be a member of, and then use their non-profit status to get federal funding and state funding. But then keep in mind, your doc will be non-profit.

The Drug Awareness doco.

The Drug Awareness doco.

My problem is not from the schools who love what i do do, its from the federal establishments who are a bunch of lazy cloud raking dinosaurs who do not understand our youth and are only there for their paychecks.

Had a much better response from Americans but not all Canucks are like that.

If they would only see what im doing for youth.

Take Care !

Im sure the Canadian goverment has a lot of money availble for grants. I think they are called trillium grants in ontario. They give out so much money each year. You just have to look to the right people. Im sure not everyone is a "lazy cloud raking dinosaur", you just have to find the right people. If your work is good enough you will be able to get funding for your movie.

Try the national film board and each of the provincial film agencies (b.c. film etc)
You are trying to get government distribution the way you would get distribution privately and thats backwards for Canada.

Do it this way:
Use your current film as a springboard/proof of concept/rough cut.
Apply for a film grant to make a better version of the film. Then the system has an obligation to help you get your film done. They will fall over backwards trying to help you and then will distribute it in the end. You are not trying to navigate a film distribution system focussed ond churning out product and making profit, you are negotiating government bureaucracy and a film is sort of out of the bounds of school boards and government ministers. When they are funding it they have an approved agenda mandated and approved by their superiors to help you.

Currently there are a few films in the system similar to yours. They got there because they were shot by the Vancouver Police. Behind a Blue Lens and Scathed are both about Meth in the downtown east side. http://www.oddsquad.com/EN/videos_for_sale/

Federal grants for filmmakers are all but unheard of in the US, whereas Canada has always had a strong federal support for filmmakers.

Even back in the 70's when the US had some semblance of arts funding, Canada was far and above in terms of their film funding.

The grass really is not greener on this side of the fence.

Its would be better for everyone if they would not exist, at least we would not waste our time filling all that paper work and beleive that they can actually help us.

Its more like an administration administrating an administration where nothing gets created.

Beleive me

Tons of filmakers get federal money to work in Canada. You just have to be worthy of the grant / bursary and have to be smart about getting it.

Okay, well this is interesting. Everyone gives you some great advice, and says opposite of your statements, yet you come in making random short comments, often angry, without any background as to what exactly you were doing.

What federal establishments don't care about the youth? The NFB gave a friend of mine (a student youth) some money to make a short doc through the doc shop. It's a program established simply for the sake of connecting with the youth and students to the NFB.

So that's where I'm lost.

I'm thinking that you're angry that they didn't give YOU some money, not the youth.
