Can you unscrew the focus hooks on the LT?

Does anyone know for sure (Mitch?) if it's safe to unscrew the operator's side focus hook? I find that's it's in the perfect place to dig into my face when I have the camera up on my shoulder. I read somewhere that you can use some pliers to remove it but I was hoping someone could confirm that this won't damage anything. Or void a warranty!
