Can you turn a prime lens into a zoom lens?

extension of the lensebarrel...?

of course you didn't even need rings, maybe you could do it freehand :-)

You did it! Somehow, you turned it into, what, a 3:1 zoom? Are you now going to explain everything, or is it just going to go on like this for a few more days?

Quick question, since they both run on electricity, can someone tell me how to turn my toaster into a microwave oven? And can it be switched back and forth on the fly?

If you can live with the reduction in image quality, it's possible to simulate 1080 HD camera moves in post by cropping into a 4K image.

The 4K Experiment…Can 1 Camera Do the Job of 2

You can't simulate a camera move with a digital zoom... however with enough resolution you could simulate an optical zoom with a digital zoom.

When a camera moves, perspective changes. There is a huge difference between a dolly-in and a zoom-in. So digital zooming will never substitue a camera move, unless it's super small creep with little forground elements to show the lack of perspective changes.

...But you can simulate a slow slider move by sliding your 1080 HD crop from one side of a 4K frame to the other. ( I've often wondered what a fast pan would look like if done in post, where you shoot with multiple static cameras aligned horizontally, so that full image resolution holds throughout the pan with the option of no motion blur in the panned image if you like )

Wow. 800 views and nobody's figured it out yet? I'm surprised. Maybe I should reveal my secret method in a proper YouTube demo video ( I hear you can make good money on YouTube these days  ). But first I think I ought to post a few more examples here and see if one of you clever people can figure it out. It's good to be back... I almost thought I wouldn't after one of the moderators had me banned from DVX a few months ago...

It doesn't matter how you are doing it. Primes are made for one purpose and zooms are made for another. If you have something useful to share with the community, then do so. No one wants to guess.
