Can you still shoot HD with 35mm adapters?

Yes indeed you can.

There was a thread I saw just the other day with someone using an sgblade on a 2/3 viper which was essentially shooting 4k.

The majority of people shooting with adapters are using them on HD cameras. You have nothing to worry about.

From that thread

"One obvious observation is that the frames that I have post are 4K... someone will ask how this is being done... Viper is a 1080 camera...!!

The answer is NO... the Viper has a 27.8Mpixels sensor (yes 2.5 times RED's) and in anamorphic CinemaScope mode it reaches 1400 lines resolution...

Yes... thats the resolution of RED... and yes Viper has the same resolution as RED in the CinemaScope mode..."

Thread Hijack... I don't want to start another resolution fight, but I have to answer...

Yes Viper is not a 4K camera...

But in CinemaScope mode it resolves more than 1300 lines in an ISO chart (actually it reaches 1400...).

I have measure RED at 1450 lines in the same chart... so if RED is a 4K camera then its Viper also...

A typical 1080 camera like F900R or Varicam 3700 has 3 x 2.2Mpixels sensors thats 6.6Mpixel sensor block, RED has 12Mpixels sensor, Viper has 3 x 9.2 Mpixels thats 27.6 Mpixels sensor block...
So for every one pixel it uses an x4 oversampling... In CinemaScope mode it uses a virtual resolution of 1920 x 1440 (4:3 area) and it crops the center 1080 to output,
so you get an anamorphic CinemaScope image that reaches the 1400 lines...

If you film record a 4K ISO res chart and use a microscope and see the film resolved resolution, you will see 1400 lines...

All the above tests I have done them my self...

The camera is using 1920 x 4320 x 3 sensor...

So yes, Viper is not a 4K camera... but on a CinemaScope movie like "Zodiac" or "The curious case of Benjamin Button" on the screen were projected an equivalent of a 4K film scan...

Or you can see that chart and tell me what resolution do you see... the numbers are in black and white... Ahh and note that this image is from SGblade and our 2/3 relay...

Well, I haven't had much experience with the Viper....I've seen in person that the red only resolves to 3k on a chart.

But nobody goes to the movie theater to watch "charts".

whatever who cares, they all make "pretty pictures". The Red's price point is what makes it special.

IMHO, the best images I have seen so far come from Arri D-21 and Phantom65.

In the end it's all about the DP and lighting anyway....I've seen plenty of red footage that looks like crap.

Usually because of the price level of the playing field for viper, d-21, phantom.....you get a higher level of talent and you see better and better images from them.

If someone wants to send me an adapter for testing, I can stick it on the RED and see how it performs.

Would be interesting...
