Can you spot the 5DII footage in this Shane Hurlbut feature

I 100% agree with him that the DSLR's are changing the way filmmaking is done. But don't take it from me, take it from established professionals (not talking about those on this board). Rodney Charters, etc.

We took it from professionals when they used an HVX200 on a Spielberg film... this isn't any different... this is all that I've tried to illustrate, which should be more inspiration to get out and do something good with any camera.

I am a film student. I've used my DSLR for the last 3 short films of mine. Once my fellow students saw how it looked, they stopped using their DVX's and XHA1's and recruited me to shoot their films. Why? BECAUSE THE CAMERA MATTERS. Saying otherwise is foolish and ultimately arrogant.
It's sad that you didn't say they hired you for your talent instead of your camera. The reality of that is that they're going to buy their own now, and hopefully they'll hire you for your talent next time...

If you feel like I deserve to be banned for expressing my opinions in a civil manner, then I don't feel like visiting this board any more. I'll get back to shooting some films while you guys keep bickering.

*end very long post*
Dunno why Spike was banned, but he surely wasn't exploring his opinion in the way that you laid it out. Nobody's going to get mad at you for it. Spike literally told Barry and I that we were afraid because DSLRs were letting people shoot incredible content.

That is highly offensive, ignorant, incorrect.

You really only need to look at the scores upon scores of fotoage on Vimeo and ask yourself how much of it you would pay to watch.

Or look at the stuff on TV these days. I don't get cable because it's 90% crap. But pro's made it, so it should be good, right? I don't buy your argument.

I think the low light capability of the 1DMKIV is pretty revolutionary, it allows for a big saving in time and money on lighting....I'm not suggesting no lighting but certainly less lighting.
And that aspect is indeed revolutionary. Not that you'll need "less lighting", because to get any particular look you need to have a certain number of sources at a certain ratio, etc.

But what it can mean, is that you can get by with a lot lower-power fixtures. And that starts savings snowballing. It may mean you don't need a 4000w HMI PAR, maybe you could get by with a 575w HMI PAR. Which may mean that you don't need a mombo-combo stand to hold that 4K HMI, you might be able to use a simple c-stand. And you don't need a generator, because with only 575 watts, you could run it off household power. And you wouldn't need two guys to lift that 4k head, because one could lift the 575w head.

If your accent/background lights could be 150w fresnels instead of 650w fresnels, then you wouldn't need to run cords all over the place trying to avoid popping circuit breakers, etc...

So yes, savings are possible from that aspect, certainly.

You mean the content is ninety-percent crap in your opinion. However, the rest of the US disagrees with you. Now, that's all well and good and you're entitled to your opinion just as, in my opinion, there's the reality that I wouldn't pay to watch anything on Vimeo, not even my own crap.

Barry beat me to it but you are right about the 1D, Squig. It presents another great opportunity for the right project. For some projects, that lowlight advantage won't matter. It depends on what you're shooting.

I should have made myself more clear. While I am perhaps the one of our bunch most into cinematography (so they probably would have asked me anyway) they needed me for it because they didn't know how to use DSLR's. When I first showed them footage from my first film with it, they immediately noticed the quality difference and asked me how I did it (depth of field, low-light, etc.). Then I told them that it was shot on an SLR.

One of them is planning on buying the 7D soon, but they will still want me to help them shoot it. Which is fun:)

Great. That sounds more like it! I know I got hired for my gear in the beginning and after a while, I began to realize that I suck (I still suck though) and started honing my own [yucky] talent so that I got a decent day rate for myself WITHOUT gear. You sound like you're headed that way too.

And it's great that your friend is gonna buy a 7D, because now he can practice in his bedroom or in the backyard and learn how to shoot, so maybe he won't have to call on you and want to try something himself. That's a great thing about the DSLRs that Squig brings up-- glad that someone came forth with an explanation-- and it's valid.

By the way, we'd all love to see some well done narrative footage so if you can post, please do.

Pretty much everyone I know, both in the film community and elsewhere, agrees with me about 90% (or 95%, it varies) of TV being crap. And on the Vimeo note, I've been awed and inspired by simple short pieces people have done. But much of it is terrible, on that we agree :)

EDIT: I just thought about sites like Hulu, which I use since I dont' get cable. There are hundreds and hundreds of comments/reviews on shows like Firefly, Arrested Development, and The Pretender bashing networks for cancelling a good show and replacing it with something less worthy. Then they invariably state their opinion on the current state of TV :)

Well, here's the other danger with this: if people think having an SLR or other camera gives them an edge, how long does that edge last? 1D Mark IV comes out in a month. Scarlet comes out in, who knows, three months maybe?

If your value is tied to some particular product, then when the market shifts, you're screwed. And who DOESN'T have a DSLR now? I've got three of the darn things. I know Kholi's said he's got like five.

There's a reason that the guys who make the big bucks don't even bother owning any gear -- they just rent whatever's the current "hot thing".

Owning gear can help you go from being the - what was it, the great unwashed masses? - to having a bit of a bath, I guess, because you can learn some basic skills. But it's the skills, not the camera, that's going to get you jobs. Unless it's an incredibly popular item and you happen to be the lucky guy who got the first one, but even then it's only going to last until either a) anyone can buy it, or b) something "better" comes along.

SOmeone around here taught me the cycle never ends. I remember disbelieving this and most of what that person said for a while, then I began to work more and see more and found that it was simply knowledge.

And Shane has like eighteen (18). I know a few people who invested in three or four. It'll kill the rental business for people without a host of contacts for sure. I dunno how I've gotten lucky but the edge doesn't last long.

I know very few industry people who are outside of the rental business that own cameras. If they do own them, it's to shoot their family outings.

Squig definitely made a point that I forgot about. IT was owning my own gear that let me go out and get the opportunity to just shoot which helped me to teach myself. I did totally forget about that.

But that's not why I get calls anymore. It's just people who're crazy enough to think I can shoot. xP I'll take it, though. Until the luck runs out.

Not as often but yes. Yet my point still stands :)

I dont' have cable either for the reason you posted. =] I just watch what I want to watch when I want to. But, I do not represent the majority of the normal population, who WILL put PARANORMAL ACTIVITY at 64 million PLUS in the matter of WEEKS.

I just felt like I needed to thank everyone here for having a civil debate/what is actually an agreement but we have to debate before we realize that LOL

On the internet there are so many cases of people getting angry over little things and going nuts/getting banned/banning/whatever. I think it's great that a communinty like this exists where a high school film student like me (I go to an arts high school) can discuss something like this with pros all over the world. :) Thanks guys!

If the 1D comes out in December it will be my 3rd DSLR in 12 months.....There's a reason it's called the bleeding edge.

Sure there have been a lot of inexpensive HD/DV cameras in the past but they just weren't as intuitive as the DSLR's. With a DSLR you plonk on a prime lens or a filter like you do on a film camera instead of searching through a menu and you instantly start thinking about lens selection, I've spent months researching and hunting down glass and now I have a great collection including anamorphic glass that I can shoot just about anything with.

I haven't mentioned talent/skills because I think it goes without saying.

i cant find this vid anywhere i think im more retared with age:Drogar-Kriz(DBG):

I received some PM about spike,i think he got a bit overexcited with 5d being on the set of ironman , itdoesnt mean that iron man was shot with 5d its just some guy had it on the set thats all(It was probably 7D anyway).

I still think that some stories deserve to be shot with filmic depth of field which says to most regular people "ahh its a movie, doesnt look like video cam" ,and if i would have to choose sub 2k $ cam then it wouldnt be dvx, probably not even hvx which is more expensive.Depth of field is needed to achieve professional look,if you dont agree just watch public enemies and come back here.
But truth is that most vimeo vids from DSLR's are bad, overexposed handheld tests, ive yet to see some crane shots with DLSR for example.
7D wont get you hollywood job but that is absolutely not the point,we just want our footage to look professional and there is nothing wrong with that.
We finally can afford something what shoots video which doesnt look like our holiday vids.I mean if you know what youre doing, because its very easy to shoot shi*ty out of focus overexposed footage with DSLR.
Its true that skills are important but without lets say electricity your IT skills are worth ZERO.Its hard to make DVX to look like 35mm we used to watch in TV (if not impossible without adapter) but easier with 7D with THE SAME SET OF SKILLS.That is my point.

Shane said something about the load crashing his server and ending the contest early, so I don't think it's there any more.
