Can you shoot native 16:9 with tape?

The HVX shoots true 16x9 to tape, in "Squeeze" mode. It makes no sense, it's just what it's called, but it's definitely a wider aspect ratio.

Yes you can shoot either 16x9 widescreen or 4x3 standard screen onto DV tape. The chips on the HVX200 are 16x9 widescreen chips, so shooting in widescreen is the camera's native mode. It can, however, crop the image coming from the chips to produce a standard 4x3 image.

Shooting in 16x9 for DV results in the image looking squeezed because the widescreen footage is being displayed with the pixel aspect ratio of 4x3. In post you can change the shape of the pixels to be wider (from .9 to 1.2) which literally spreads out the squeezed image. As long as you set your pixel aspect ratio for widescreen when you render out or encode, your footage will transfer nicely to anamorphic widescreen DVD.

Both 16x9 and 4x3 are 720x480 (NTSC not PAL), it's just the pixels that change shape from being nearly square (4x3) to being rectangular (16x9).

Anamorphic widescreen means that the screen size that is displaying the footage is truly 16x9 and allowing for the morphed rectangular pixels to fill the screen in their widened aspect ratio. Otherwise widescreen footage that is shown within a standard 4x3 screen is either going to be letterboxed or is going to look very squeezed.

EDIT -- Note that this pertains to DV and how the DV codec produces both standard and widescreen images with the same 720x480 resolution. I am not so sure if there are similarities with the HD codecs. Does anyone know if HD codecs deal with pixel aspect ratio in the same way?
