Can you send me AVCHD footage?

Hello im seriously considering getting a hmc150 but i would like to make sure that my computer can handle the AVCHD files. i was wondering if someone would be nice enough to send me some 720p raw files right off the camera(as i will mainly be shooting 720p 60) i have CS4 so i know my software can handle it i just want to make sure my hardware can because i have only used MiniDV video.

The easiest way to upload would probably be to upload them to a file up load site like http://www.mediafire.com/ or http://www.megafileupload.com/ if you would rather not to that i can give you my AIM screen name and you can send me the files that way.

Thanks a ton
Tyler K.

I would love to send you files... in fact I captured some just for this purposes but (a) I can't find them, and (b) there is no decent internet access where I live (~10kbps at night) so can't possibly send them. BUT - there are several clips floating around the internet and it's been referred to on this forum in the past. Mostly it was about 14 months ago when this camera was hot off the factory line, so search for topics around that time and I know there are at least two people who have posted footage.

Alternatively, if you can tell me what your computer specs and editing software are, we can probably give you a pretty good estimate as to what to expect.

as of right now my laptop that i edit with runs windows vista 32bit, has a intel core 2 duo running at 1.73Ghz and i have 3gb of ram. i can power through stuff in AFX and premiere fine but i have never tried HD footage.

If this would be slow but still work that would be fine for me because i plan on buying a xps 9000 which has a 2.66Ghz i7, 12 GB of ram and runs windows 7 64 bit.

To seriously test your workflow, I think you'd need more data than what I can reasonably upload. Mail me a 2GB card and I'll send the card back to you with some 720-60P stuff to play with.
PM me if interested.

"Raw" AVCHD will be a disaster with CS4 on your laptop. You may be able to do something with Edius, I don't know. You'll need to transcode to something you can edit -- and there are very good arguments in favor of doing that -- because you're getting better images than HDV anything, I think better than XDCAM-EX, and potentially in the same ballpark as DVCPROHD in terms of image quality.

The system you plan on will be fine on CS4, better with CS5, and if you get one of the Adobe approved video cards -- a dream with CS5.

For me/us -- performance issues with HMC150 footage is a vague black and white memory from the distant past. Our current system is similar to the one you intend, with CS5.

ya after reading a bit i figured raw avchd would be a problem with my set up but didnt know if i would be able to make it work by tanscoding or somehting, hence why im looking for video to test with. im compleatly new to anything other then SD video written to MiniDV tape so a need to learn alot.

what im starting to lean a little towards is buying and maxing out a computer and possibly moving to CS5 products then later on buying the hmc150.

i would rather not do this as i would like to move out of SD video written to MiniDV and move on to HD saved to a removable, cheap, solid state memory as soon as i can.

If you haven't already -- run a search on this forum for sample HMC150 footage. I know there used to be sample footage posted. If you absolutely can't find anything, send me a PM and I'll go out and film something and post it to a private link.

Panasonic offers a free transcoder to DVCPROHD, which in truth is near the best option, but be prepared for 1 gigabyte per minute file sizes. Search this forum and you'll find all this stuff discussed to death over the past year. But, again, if you can't find footage, send me a PM that includes what you want and I'll do my best to post something to a private link for you.

I found the footage I was talking about earlier. The sizes are:

720/24p: 760MB
720/60p: 488MB
1080/24p: 477MB
1080/60i: 426MB

If you'd like me to send any of these let me know. I don't have these uploaded yet but I can upload whichever you'd like and send you the link.

Also, I want to basically agree with everyone here: AVCHD will murder your laptop and on your desktop it will probably be tolerable or fine based on how particular you are about performance. I have the exact machine you want to buy (custom built) and in CS4 AVCHD is good and it's better in CS5. However it's still nowhere near as fast as DVCProHD. I like to scrub thru 2 minute clips in a few seconds and I see dozens of frames with DVCProHD but maybe ten with AVCHD. So scrubbing is still sluggish.

You could buy the HMC150 today, transcode everything to DVCProHD and edit on your laptop probably with very few problems.

it would be great if you could upload the 720/60p footage as thats what i would be shooting most of the time. thanks a ton to everyone who have helped so far

Ok, here you go:

http://files.allenellis.com/hmc150/

FYI I wasn't paying much attention to my settings so some of the footage might be a little soft (I think this was all shot with the LoNoiz scene file). I'm sure with Barry behind my shoulder you'd be able to squeeze a little more clarity out of these shots.

If you want me to upload the other formats too just let me know. This offer stands to anyone else who discovers this thread, too - just bump it or PM me. Obviously don't post this link everywhere or download it tons of times since bandwidth is expensive.
