Can you record directly to a computer

Hi
I am interested in purchasing a HVX200 for bigger project. The thought of recording to P2 cards > dumping that to a external harddrive via my cmputer and repeating that those steps over and over and over seems a bit much.

I've asked this question to several qualified people and have gotten 2 different
answers so I ask of you to only respond if you have actually attempted
to do this::dankk2:

My questions are:
Can you record directly to your computer via HD editing software?
and
Is there an interface available so I can dump this directly to an
external harddrive?

Oh, by the way, I already know about the Firestore 100, I don't want to spend
that kind of money for such a limited device. I mean it's not much more then a
100g external harddrive with a interface.

Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

One of those people wasn't qualified.

Yes, you can record directly to a computer. Apple's Final Cut Pro can do it. Canopus Edius 4 Broadcast can do it. Serious Magic's DV Rack 2.0 HD can do it.

I don't use Macs so I'm not 100% sure, but I would think that FCP lets you specify an external drive as a capture destination. Edius and DV Rack certainly let you do that.

Just did it last weekend works fine, no dropped frames, used a 6ft. cable also. One thing to be careful of is that the firewire plug to the camera is extremely small and can slip out easily with camera movement.

The official maximum Firewire cable length is 4.5 meters. Slightly longer cables may work for DVCProHD, but there are no guarantees -- this game is very different from 25Mbps DV/HDV. There are Firewire repeaters available that let you go hundreds of meters if needed.
