Is there a way to connect and record to an external hard drive via a laptop (ala hvx200)????
It would be great if I could use my MAC laptop to record my video directly to my 320G hard drive. Even better if I could use it to view what I am shooting (instead of my viewfinder) and connect my protools (for audio) all at once...but i'd be asking for too much huh?
I'm really trying to circumvent the DV tape process and go directly to the external hard drive...I'll be happy with just that.
THANKS ahead of time.

Well, sure . . . most NLEs allow live capture, and you can specify the capture drive as the external.

You could do it from Windows Movie Maker if you really wanted to.

But it sounds like what you REALLY want is DV Rack.

I'm just trying to avoid any tape complications. I'm working as a DP (my first job as one) and they were having some problems with a few audio drops and also some small video glitches. I've cleaned the heads so I'm not sure if the next step is servicing my DVX100b. I'm frustrated because I want to do my best and this is a great opportunity for me. That's why I thought that I could maybe try going directly to my 320g hard drive via my MAC laptop ( I also have final cut pro HD on it).
So you are saying it's possible...great...I'll look into some more.

make sure that its a firewire external harddisk for powerbook .
depend on your laptop. some external harddisk will require additional power supply .

??

Or make sure it's a USB2 drive for your PC laptop.

The setup I'm using is an AMD 64 X2 and a 120G 2.5" in a USB 2 enclosure. I'm running DV Rack (trial at the moment) and it works flawlessly. For the last 3 takes yesterday my firewire plug came out and the last 3 takes weren't captured on computer and I'm bummed that I will actually have to tape transfer those takes. After having shot once with DV Rack, I cant even imagine not shooting with it anymore. It is awesome. All I need now is a cable longer than 10' as I do alot of handheld and it's ridiculous watching my AC following me with the laptop.

I agree that in theory firewire is "better", but you by no means "need" it. My USB port powered HDD works flawlessly.

Zev,

Not to rain on David's or Gage's parade on DV rack (which is for PC only!), but since you specified you have a mac laptop, You might want to check out this thread: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=51700
which has the brand new Mac equivalent to DV rack.

I'm not advocating one over the other, just making you aware that a MAC product does exist AND at the moment it is less expensive than DV rack!

At least give "bena" a PM to find out about it before you buy anything.

Ken :)

I use premiere elements on a laptop...granted any capturing software would work, but DV rack gives you some added benefits and workflow. ah but i don't have a mac so couldn't tell ya.

Can I do this with Final Cut 5.0?

I've been trying with no success - I can capture using 'non-controllable device' but this means the camera timecode is not recorded.

Haven't been able to do it with the HDX900 either.

If you need a good drive in the field, I recommend the Little Big Disk from Lacie. It's got two drives inside in a RAID0 array - looks like a single, very fast drive to the user. Can be powered off of the firewire cable - 400 or 800 - so you can power off a laptop's internal battery only if there is no AC available. Also has USB port.
