Its just so unnecessary for most of our shoots and uses up edit time in muting tracks for decent monitoring per every single clip (on Avid at least) as well as wasting a bit of storage on card and at our edit & archive HDD's?

Thanks - was using DVCPro50 today. Is that an audio menu setting that then pops up AFTER I have selected the video format? BD
 
Go into your camera Audio settings to check to see about Ch.3,4 off for DV record. I don't think you can avoid it for DV50 and above. But like Gary points out, in L&T you can desellect3,4 tracks on ingest.

I cut mostly on Avid so don't have to ingest where you get the option to 'ignore' A3 & A4 as you say. With Avid I just tell it where the P2 card or P2 media folder is and off I go on a 64Gb card in seconds :). I can also backup the P2 files to a mirrored RAID archive as I edit - a really nice workflow for quick turnaround :)
