can you name this singer??

Hank Williams, Sr. is the original singer of "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry".

I've never heard the version of the song you linked to. Perhaps, it was some local talent that only played in your area.

Oh, man. Now it's driving ME crazy. Have you got ANY other info on it or is that it. I feel like I'm on a mission to find out now.:(

Blaine, the only other info I have:

I only listen to public radio, so this wouldn't have been a bootleg.

It sounds to me like a large concert hall, and an expensive production. Here in VT, we don't have very large venues and wouldn't merit a high-cost production. So it's probably not local. Also, I've never heard of a concert in VT being released on CD.

It would help to get the opinion of an expert on accents and pronunciations, because this guy doesn't sound like southern US to me.

I've eliminated a lot of the 80s and older recordings by listening to Amazon samples.

At first I'd thought it was Tom Jones, but members of a TJ fansite disagreed.

I have the entire song on cassette, if a larger sample would help. And if I get in trouble with the copyright police, at least I'll find out who it is!

If you eliminate the ones newer than '80s, and the ones that are clearly wrong voice (Connie Stevens, Dean Martin), and the ones that don't have samples on Amazon, there aren't a lot left. Most are real country singers, and this guy isn't. Another way to sort: live vs studio albums. This one's definitely live, and that's a lot of its excitement.

Somewhere in this world are a few hundred fans who attended the concert. I just gotta find one of 'em.

Couldn't find a Charley Pride version, but based on some other song samples: voice is higher than my guy, more nasal, and more "southern".

I think they'd be as clueless as the rest of us...this was 20 years ago, and I doubt anyone from that era still works there.

Glen Campbell, maybe? sounded a little over-dramatized like other performances of his (see "Rhinestone Cowboy")

I actually thought it might have been BJ Thomas. Rich, your excellent and extensive list, doesnt include him. I have a version with BJ Thomas singing it, but its a studio version and is more intimate.

The thing is, this guy has a slight twang in his voice, which BJ doesn't have. So, I'm not convinced its BJ.

Ok, I just listened to some Glen Campbell on Amazon and that is definitely my vote within Rich Lee's posted list.

What makes you so sure, Terry? I just listened to this powerdog's posted song simultaneously with "Wichita Lineman" from Glen Campbell and still found the voices similar. I'm not saying it's definitely Campbell; I'm just not convinced it isn't.

Oh sure, I could be wrong, but I grew up with Glen Campbell's records, TV show, etc. and I do not believe that to be the timbre of Glen's voice at all.
