Can you mix 1080p and 720p footage together?

For an upcoming shoot I would like to have some shots in slow motion, and some shots not.

The final export will be a 24p movie.

So can I use the 720p 60fps mode for the slow motion to record, and then switch to 1080p 24fps mode to record the rest, and then put them together on a timeline in FCP and export as a 720p at 24fps movie?

Is that possible and will that give me decent quality for the web? And should I transcode the 1080p footage first into 720p before importing in FCP?

I do that all the time and it works fine. I usually just drop the 1080p footage into a 720p timeline, and Final Cut Pro can do the scaling on the fly. Alternatively, you could choose to scale the 720p footage into a 1080p timeline. I don't like scaling stuff up like that, but I know others have made it work just fine.

I agree. Scale down the 1080 in the timeline, don't transfer it into 720 first (you may lose quality). As far as web quality goes, most laptops don't show 1080 anyway, so 720 is great for web videos. Good luck!

I would personally go with editing first and as the last step converting everything to 720p-24fps and then put everything together.
