Can you composite with GH1 footage?

May be a dumb question, but I want to composite in blood splatter in a slash scene but don't know if there is any reason why special effects compositing would be a problem with AVCHD.

Also, do CGI blood splatters look realistic?

You can try but I've NEVER been satisfied with CGI blood, the best examples are IMHO Rob Zombies "THe Devil's Rejects" and George Romeros last two dead films "Document of the Dead" and "Survival of the Dead"-they are passable at best with regard to CGI blood, my advice- shoot it on set and you'll be much happier as far as the realism factor goes.
 
You can composite without CGI if that works better for you. Get shots of actual splatter on something you can key out. The keying wouldn't even be with the AVCHD footage, so I'm not sure what you think could be the problem.

I agree, go with real stock footage you can key. Although I also agree that real spatter is the best on set but I have used some gunshot spatter clips keyed out that blended in very well.
 
That is interesting-I think the lighting is a big factor in matching the keyed material and makes or breaks these types of shots-for narrative work I would only use this as a last resort to sell a plot point that couldn't be made on a REAL location shoot-but the hack HAS improved the resolution to the point where keying becomes more attractive.
 
This is a frame grab from a quick & dirty key I did before the firmware hack was available. Because I didn't know any better at the time, I used FCP's old chromakey plugin to pull this key. I've since learned that better keys can be achieved using Motion. I'll have to try that soon. So, although this key isn't state of the (FCP) art, it came out OK. I'm looking forward to doing another key now that my GH1 is hacked.
