Can USB Flash memory drives be used?

Forgive the lack of technical understanding on my part but lately I've been seeing a lot of these tiny usb flash drives of 4gb, 8gb, and even 16gb.

Would it be possible to shoot on the P2 cards and then download the footage onto a flash drive? They are relatively cheap and so tiny you could carry a number of them easily.

The problem would be power, the HVX can not supply bus power so it could not transfer to these drives without them having thier own batteries or power supplies.

Also, those usb flash drives are made up of a single memory card in most cases and do not have any where near the transfer spead of P2 cards which are made up of (i believe 4, SD memory cards raided together).

The flash drives, even if you could connect them to the cam, aren't fast enough.

Morgan, I think Phil was referring to dumping the P2 cards to the USB drives, not streaming to them. evinsky has it right about the BUS power not being provided. Even if there was BUS power, it still wouldn't work because the HVX will only support USB OTG (On The Go) technology. As far as I know, there aren't any OTG thumb drives out yet. The MWave USB OTG drive seems to getting good reports and there have been multiple tests done with some 1394 drive enclosures.

Best regards,

i guess you're right that you COULD offload to them, but it would be ALOT slower to offload to a thumb drive than to an actual hard drive right?
