Can this be done with the 1DXMKII...?

i want to use and external EVF to immerse myself while recording but want to use the back of the cameras LCD to move AF points around at the same time...so...

i want to "MIRROR" the LCD (from the back of the 1DXmkII) to show all of the information in the attached EVF....

i want to be able to use my left "thumb" to move the "focus points" around on the camera LCD....AND...be able to "see" the AF points in the external EVF as i move them and that i am successfully tracking my desired object.

SO FAR ALL I CAN DO IS...

...have the camera LCD with full info and AF points show up in the camera LCD but i only see "VIDEO ONLY" in the external EVF. not even the "red record" icon and no other info as to f stop or shutter speed etc.

or

i can have all of the INFO & red record icon show up in the external EVF but then the cameras LCD is "turned off" and then i "CAN NOT" use my thumb to move or direct AF POINTS. the cameras LCD is literally "nonfunctional".

im 99% sure i can't do what i want to do but hoping I'm missing something in the settings. all of my video "camcorders" allow to fully "mirror" the cameras flip out LCD with all information and the red record icon but the 1DXmkII does not appear to be able to do this.

I'm hoping someone here with this camera might shed some light on this issue.

thanks!!

i sort of solved my problem.

i just received the WFT-E8A wireless transmitter. with this i can send full "touch pad" functionality to an iPad and or any mobile device to do the AF actions while using an external EVF with "all camera info "plus" the cameras AF "squares" visible. the cameras own LCD is now black but is replaced by my iPad or iPhone etc.

on a bright day for me any screen it not easy to look at which is why i find an EVF more functional.

there are a few oddities with using a mobile device attached to the 1DXkII.

1 - there's a bit of latency. and id say its similar to using my older Zacuto EVF. not a deal breaker but something to be aware of.

2 - i "cannot" "drag" the AF points around on my iPad like i can on the back of the cameras LCD. you need to tap specifically where you want your AF to be.

3 - at first i thought the response on the iPad was clunky and sluggish but then i figured out you have to do a specific quick "tap" and it responds fine. if you bury your finger for anything more than a "tap" the re-assignment of the AF won't do anything. so a quick little tap is the way to get good response. when you tap for AF there is a slight delay in the AF square showing where you tap. i thought this might be a problem but found that it wasn't an issue at all after getting used to it.

4 - on the Apple App Store the Canon "Camera Connect" app is rated REAL LOW!. there are way more unhappy users than happy users. with that said i didn't have any problems in getting the 1DXkII to connect an iPad air 2, iPad Pro & iPhone 6s and it operation was good where i needed it to be good. with that said i find the interface for more adjustments of the camera to be "ok" at best and could be layed out better IMO. still for basic AF, start & stopping, changing aperture and shutter speed good enough.

5 - not a big deal but just so you know you "cannot" play back a movie on the mobile device. it will show a thumbnail/photo representing that it is a movie but does not play back.

a little bonus on the iPad is that if you "double tap" the screen it will zoom in real close for critical focus...BUT...is you "double tap" while the camera is in the process of acquiring a new focus...the focusing seems to stop until you "exit" your zoom and then need to "tap" again to make the camera focus.

I'm feeling that this $600 investment will be very useful.
